On the South West Coastal Path we would have preferred to have stayed in Mortehoe or Woolacombe but could not get anywhere that offered a one night only room. So we plumped for the Fortescue which is about 1.5 miles off the path. First impression was from the lounge bar which was a typical family pub layout, not cosy at all. But the rooms, ugh! Sterile motel layout, in need of modernisation. Shower hand set was broken off the wall, wc pan wobbly and cistern and wash basin cracked. (Fellow guests refused their room as the wc pan was smashed!! ) It was apparent that the Fort hosted the hen / stag party crowd who had left their mark. In fairness the beds were comfortable and linen was clean.
We had heard good reports about the meals at the Fort and have to admit that the breakfast was delicious.
The host was very friendly, but he needs to pump some finance into refurbishment if he wants to achieve any return bookings.
