“Sunday Lunch - good food but mediocre service”

Gleneagles Hotel

22 Apr 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

My wife and I were given a voucher for Sunday lunch for 2 as a gift, and I am glad that we didn't have to pay! ~We went on our anniversary to the Strahtearn Restaurant in April 2008, and it was pretty quiet, half empty, so the atmosphere was that of an old folks' home. Food was good, apart from a very dry Rum Baba, definitely on the stodgy side!
Coffee was given rather begrudingly, I think we had outstayed our welcome, but service was slow, don't know how they would have managed if the restaurant had been full, and the truffles listed as being with the coffee arrived 5 minutes later, from a waitress whi seemed to imagine such service was beneath her.
Would I go back - no, I prefer a bit of atmosphere and value for money. Shame too about the bar. Lovely setting though.

“excellent birthday celebrations”

Gleneagles Hotel

20 Apr 2008

As four Pisceans, we chose to celebrate this year's joint birthdays at Gleneagles. Our rooms were beautifully decorated, very spacious and with lovely views over the front entrance.
The recently opened Spa was a spectacular high light, as was the clay pigeon shooting, which was more fun than any of us could have imagined.
All four thought our main dinner in the Strathearn Restaurant was exceptionally good. We especially enjoyed the friendly ease with which the crepe suzette was prepared at our table.
We found the hotel staff were very friendly and efficient and helped to make the entire experience a comfortable relaxing break.

“Expensive but worth it”

Gleneagles Hotel

My partner and I stayed at Gleneagles for a couple of nights over the Easter weekend. What a fantastic place!! Yes it’s very expensive but for a treat is worth every penny.

The hotel is completely unpretentious. The staff are professional and courteous but not too formal - friendly and chatty and happy to have a laugh. The entrance is grand with a beautiful big staircase. The feel of the décor throughout the public areas is 30’s art deco. Our bedroom was very comfy - modern decoration in muted, relaxing colours. The bathroom had a separate shower, twin sinks and a claw foot bath. Nice toiletries and use of a robe and slippers.

We ate in the Strathearn restaurant – the food was delicious, including the best bread and butter pudding I’ve ever had. We didn’t try Deseo which is the more informal Mediterranean restaurant – more suitable for those with children. Though it was the more formal restaurant, Strathearn didn’t feel stuffy. It was well laid out so that it felt intimate – try to get a table in the conservatory area as it’s smaller. Breakfast is a feast – tables groaning with goodies – both healthy and not – a real dilemma to choose what to have.

I had the most fabulous afternoon tea I’ve ever had in my life which came in separate courses with fresh tea/coffee with each. Don’t eat any lunch before it!!

There’s a big pool, usually full of children, but also a separate lap pool which tended to just have adults in it. There’s also an outdoor hot pool which they unfortunately allow kids in – so no relaxation there. There is also a large well equipped gym and different length running tracks through the golf courses – great to run through in the early morning when there’s no-one else about. There are loads of other activities but all cost extra and are quite pricey.

The new Espa Spa is fabulous with very attentive staff to show you round all the facilities. I had a spa treatment in the afternoon of the day we checked out and the reception staff were very accommodating by stretching our check out time.

I highly recommend this hotel. Don’t go and have an attitude of disbelief about the price of everything while you’re there. Accept in advance it’s going to be expensive then relax and just enjoy the luxury. We will be back.

“mixed feeling, overall a nice experience”

Gleneagles Hotel

Stayed here for 1 night during the trip from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond. The only thing that I can say - this is a very specific hotel for a very specific category of tourists. If you need old-style luxury, like golf (or, for example, shooting or fishing) and have a budget which allows you to pay over 600 EURO a night and not complain on small details - then it's a nice choice. It's like living in a country mansion - a large territory, old-fashioned buildings and nowhere to go outside. The nearest town is 3 miles away.
The rooms are absolutely fabulous, but only at a first glance. A bit old, a bit pretentious, but... cold floors in the bathroom, stained windows, strange air-condition control..
The good things were food (although VERY overpriced), free internet access in the lobby, nice kids room, beautiful views and reasonable quality of service.

“as I expected...”

I was travelling with my partner and two of our friends and we'd booked a luxury short break that included one of the following for each guest (including dinner in the evening)

* 1 round of golf on either the PGA Centenary, King’s or Queen’s Courses
* 1 hour lesson at The Golf Academy, including a DVD or CD-Rom of the lesson and a swing photograph
* 45 minutes of horse-riding or carriage driving
* 50 clays and cartridges at The Gleneagles Shooting School
* Introduction to falconry lesson
* 2½ hour trout fishing (minimum of two guests)
* 1 hour argo driving in an all-terrain vehicle (minimum of two guests)
* 1¼ hour lesson in off road driving with demonstration and coaching by a fully qualified instructor (minimum of two guests)
* Up to 55 minutes of health and beauty treatments at The Spa

My partner chose the golf and I chose The Spa. The Spa was fabulous - recently refurbished and truly sensational.

I also went horse-riding: gorgeous scenery, lovely horse! The equestrian facilities were amazing.

Food at the The Strathearn was lovely - I haven't had Flambé Crepe Suzette cooked at the table since I stayed the St Pierre Park in Guernsey back in 1999 - truly mouth watering!

The hotel also offer a "cab" service around the hotel - the concierge "delivered" me to the equestrian centre and also took us into Auchterader - no charge!

We stayed in a Classic room - but we certainly weren't disappointed - fabulous room. Ok, so we didn't have a view of the grounds (there were no Sovereign or Estate rooms available) but we did have a view of pretty courtyard and the bathroom was as you would expect - large with top notch toiletries and the bed was MASSIVE!

Stay at Gleneagles and be completely pampered!
