“An enjoyable stay”

Gleneagles Hotel

Buckinghamshire

I was lucky enough to be staying at the hotel on business but was a bit worried that as I don't play golf, I may be bored. This was not a problem at all.

The hotel has a wide variety of activities on site, the falconry and gundog school are excellent and if you are interested in that sort of thing I would thoroughly recommend them highly.

I got the distinct impression during my stay that service is very important to this hotel, concierge, shops, porters and also the poor guy who said "hello" to me everytime he opened the door for me after yet another cigarette in the grounds.

The only place I didn't get that impression was in the restaurant during breakfast, we did have some private dinners that were absolutely fantastic, but during general service I get the impression that you may need to make your presence known to get what you really want - this was only in the Strathearn, I can't comment on the other restaurants.

I was in a Sovereign room, which to be honest felt huge on my own, some areas were a little tired but generally a wow factor!

I went before the spa was updated, but again the staff there were excellent.

I think this hotel is great if you feel like a bit of a splurge-I honestly can't say that I would stay here again if I had to pay my own way, but the setting is so beautiful and the staff so friendly I just might?

“Sunday Lunch - good food but mediocre service”

Gleneagles Hotel

22 Apr 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

My wife and I were given a voucher for Sunday lunch for 2 as a gift, and I am glad that we didn't have to pay! ~We went on our anniversary to the Strahtearn Restaurant in April 2008, and it was pretty quiet, half empty, so the atmosphere was that of an old folks' home. Food was good, apart from a very dry Rum Baba, definitely on the stodgy side!
Coffee was given rather begrudingly, I think we had outstayed our welcome, but service was slow, don't know how they would have managed if the restaurant had been full, and the truffles listed as being with the coffee arrived 5 minutes later, from a waitress whi seemed to imagine such service was beneath her.
Would I go back - no, I prefer a bit of atmosphere and value for money. Shame too about the bar. Lovely setting though.

“excellent birthday celebrations”

Gleneagles Hotel

20 Apr 2008

As four Pisceans, we chose to celebrate this year's joint birthdays at Gleneagles. Our rooms were beautifully decorated, very spacious and with lovely views over the front entrance.
The recently opened Spa was a spectacular high light, as was the clay pigeon shooting, which was more fun than any of us could have imagined.
All four thought our main dinner in the Strathearn Restaurant was exceptionally good. We especially enjoyed the friendly ease with which the crepe suzette was prepared at our table.
We found the hotel staff were very friendly and efficient and helped to make the entire experience a comfortable relaxing break.

“Expensive but worth it”

Gleneagles Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Edinburgh, United Kingdom

My partner and I stayed at Gleneagles for a couple of nights over the Easter weekend. What a fantastic place!! Yes it’s very expensive but for a treat is worth every penny.

The hotel is completely unpretentious. The staff are professional and courteous but not too formal - friendly and chatty and happy to have a laugh. The entrance is grand with a beautiful big staircase. The feel of the décor throughout the public areas is 30’s art deco. Our bedroom was very comfy - modern decoration in muted, relaxing colours. The bathroom had a separate shower, twin sinks and a claw foot bath. Nice toiletries and use of a robe and slippers.

We ate in the Strathearn restaurant – the food was delicious, including the best bread and butter pudding I’ve ever had. We didn’t try Deseo which is the more informal Mediterranean restaurant – more suitable for those with children. Though it was the more formal restaurant, Strathearn didn’t feel stuffy. It was well laid out so that it felt intimate – try to get a table in the conservatory area as it’s smaller. Breakfast is a feast – tables groaning with goodies – both healthy and not – a real dilemma to choose what to have.

I had the most fabulous afternoon tea I’ve ever had in my life which came in separate courses with fresh tea/coffee with each. Don’t eat any lunch before it!!

There’s a big pool, usually full of children, but also a separate lap pool which tended to just have adults in it. There’s also an outdoor hot pool which they unfortunately allow kids in – so no relaxation there. There is also a large well equipped gym and different length running tracks through the golf courses – great to run through in the early morning when there’s no-one else about. There are loads of other activities but all cost extra and are quite pricey.

The new Espa Spa is fabulous with very attentive staff to show you round all the facilities. I had a spa treatment in the afternoon of the day we checked out and the reception staff were very accommodating by stretching our check out time.

I highly recommend this hotel. Don’t go and have an attitude of disbelief about the price of everything while you’re there. Accept in advance it’s going to be expensive then relax and just enjoy the luxury. We will be back.

“mixed feeling, overall a nice experience”

Gleneagles Hotel

5 Apr 2008

Stayed here for 1 night during the trip from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond. The only thing that I can say - this is a very specific hotel for a very specific category of tourists. If you need old-style luxury, like golf (or, for example, shooting or fishing) and have a budget which allows you to pay over 600 EURO a night and not complain on small details - then it's a nice choice. It's like living in a country mansion - a large territory, old-fashioned buildings and nowhere to go outside. The nearest town is 3 miles away.
The rooms are absolutely fabulous, but only at a first glance. A bit old, a bit pretentious, but... cold floors in the bathroom, stained windows, strange air-condition control..
The good things were food (although VERY overpriced), free internet access in the lobby, nice kids room, beautiful views and reasonable quality of service.
