Just returned from a 2 night stay in one of the hotel chalets. The chalet is like a small log cabin and is situated on a hill. Due to steep hill incline it is certainly not suitable for anyone who has difficulty walking. (indeed I consider myself quite fit, but the climb from the hotel to the chalet made me breathless everytime!). The living space in the chalet is small and adequate, although I was impressed by the kitchen. Word of warning if you decide to stay in the chalet and you are a light sleeper. The chalet is surrounded by tall trees and at this time of year the weather can be brutal and the wind was noisy both day and night. Also the birds start singing around 4am! Security in the chalets is shocking. There is no safe for valuables and the locks on doors at the front and back of the accommodation were weak. We had to carry about our valuables because we did not trust the locks.
Self catering residents will have to take a basic stock of food items with them as there is no shop onsite. We ate at the Golf Club House and the Winter Gardens and on both occasions we found the food good and priced reasonable.
The children were disappointed in the Big Country Kids Club. The activities stated on the rota did not take place and the staff just seemed to throw colouring in items at the children to keep them busy.
The outdoor activities were pricey. We tried the golf driving range and pitch and putt, both of which were reasonably priced. Children also tried quad biking, little overpriced. The staff at the outdoor centre were young, friendly and helpful.
The pool was slightly disappointing. Its small and the sauna and steam room were luke warm! Booked the Victorian spa, which is an additional charge. Nice to look at but again its quite small.
I would not recommend booking this hotel if you are looking for a luxury spa break, nor would I recommend it as an activity break for young families, unless you have won the lottery! It is set in a beautiful part of Scotland and the scenery (weather permitting) is spectactular, so if long walks in the countryside and nice food are what you' after, Crieff Hydro won't disappoint.
