Just back from a weekend stay at The Torridon. This was our second time here in the past 3 years and our stay matched our expectations. This is a first class hotel,In one of the best areas in the country .After a day climbing the mountains roundabout to come back to a cosy welcome, fantastic room ,great service and the best food you will ever get ,is pure luxury. The only slight fault we could complain about was one couple in our group who had booked the same grade of room as the rest of us got one of the last rooms waiting to be refurbished and there was a definate difference in room quality so if booking make sure you get one of the newer rooms which are of an extremely high quality.

Keep up the good work "The Torridon" we will be back.

Can't Wait To Go Back

The Torridon

Just back from The Torridon and had to write a review straight away. In a word it is Magnificent. The location is remote, peaceful and beautiful (well worth the drive up the single track road, watch out for deer and sheep). The food was sublime. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. The room was wonderful with a massive bed. Relaxing in the slipper bath in the turret looking over the loch was delightful. Would recommend this hotel to any of my friends or family in a heartbeat.

Secluded Luxury

The Torridon

We've stayed here a couple of times and on both occasions, it's been fabulous. Our original visit was a honeymoon present and it's a very memorable one.

It's expensive, but it's really very pleasant indeed. There is, of course, some superb walking and scenery around here, and to come back from a hard days' tramping up a hill to the luxury of Torridon makes it even more worthwhile.

I'm not sure I'd stay here with children, it just wouldn't work. But a quiet weekend away without them? The perfect location to escape to.

  • Liked — luxury and style
  • Disliked — price. but I always say that.. and occasionally, it's worth paying the price.

Overpriced and living on its reputation

We stayed here for 3 nights in January 2007 having stayed here before and been impressed. We were really disappointed this time and thought it was grossly overpriced and living on its reputation. Bearing in mind this was January, there was only a tiny fire burning in the reception hall when you would expect a big roaring one. On both the Saturday and Sunday they couldn't be bothered to light a fire in the residents lounge or the library so it was hardly a welcoming place to come back to after a good long walk. We booked a superior room which was really dated and tired. All in all it seemed as if the owners are now just going through the motions so to speak. We would definitely not recommend it to anyone.

Management response from DanRB, Managing Director

I have written to the reviewer and apologised and explained what we have done. I would add we were somewhat surprised to receive a review for January in September, as it is hard for us to retrace any comments made at the time of departure.

The couple were on a birthday celebration for which they were upgraded to a Deluxe room. This room was completely refurbished in March 2007 and can be viewed on our new website. I have apologised for the fires where the size of the fire was not big enough in the reception and it is normal practice to have the other fires lit when people are sitting in front of them.

In early January 2007 we refurbished the bar, drawing room, library and reception. Since Dec 2006 we have refurbished 4 bedrooms and 3 more are planned for this winter 2007. We have gone through a major rebranding in the last 6 months and are now known as The Torridon. By any stretch of the imagination this is not "going through the motions". The ownership remains the same family although the younger generation have bought the business in recent years and have moved the hotel on.

We have invited the reviewer back to see the recent changes.

Jewelbox of a Setting

The Torridon

I stayed here August '07 for one night in the "royal suite" which was their most expensive room. The hotel itself was a laird's hunting lodge, nicely converted to a very comfortable hotel, with some portions added to modernize services. The ambiance is special and creates a view of the life of the wealthy 150 years ago. It is located back from the lake, with a dramatic view of the mountains, and Highland "coos" grazing in front. The accomodation was excellent, nicely appointed, and staff could not have been any more attentive. The whisky bar has 310 single malts!! Local walks and hikes are easily accessed, and there is a full-time recreation director (I took a sunrise walk at 430 AM). Breakfast and dinner service was excellent, and the dinner itself was one of the finest meals in recent memory.

  • Liked — Grandeur of the setting
  • Disliked — Current exchange rates of the dollar to pound make this quite expensive (Aug 2007)
