Approaching Duntulm Castle Hotel from the south was a somewhat disconcerting experience - miles of single lane road (but great scenery) until you suddenly arrive (the northern approach has a shorter stretch of single lane road). The hotel is uninspiring in appearance and was surrounded by mud, a flock of sheep and their dung. The rooms that we had booked were up windy staircases. The bed was comfortable but the plumbing distinctly primitive. What was unforgettable was the view from the window - the ruins of Duntulm Castle on a rocky hill to one side and the sea stretching towards the Hebrides with multiple islands dotting the water. It was a treat to be able to lie in bed and look out at that view - even though I was rather tired and the sun sets very late in the Scottish summer I kept the curtains open so that I would not miss a moment of that view while I was still awake. The isolation of the hotel ensured quiet as well. There was no TV or internet - it was not missed.
The owners are a characterful and helpful couple. The menu for the evening meal was limited but of good uality and the breakfast was equally satisfying.
I won't pretend that this was a five star experience but it was an adventure, an experience, a step outside bland conformity. I loved it.
