San Pancho is a very sleepy, yet energetic town just 45 minutes drive north of Puerta Vallarta Airport. It is a wonderful place to relax and soak in beachside Mexican culture. We stayed at Hotel CIelo Rojo in January of 2012. I chose the hotel through the great online reviews and also because it offered an organic breakfast as part of the rate.
I feel that we got a great value out of this hotel. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable and the restaurant serves the best food! Some might say the restaurant is expensive compared to the other restaurants in town and that's true, however, the quality of the food is worth it. We had breakfast every day here and dinner twice. We would have gone three times for dinner but the restaurant is closed on Mondays. When we ate at a different restaurant that night we were disappointed. We should have gone to one of the taco stands which I'm sure would have been WAY better at a fraction of the price. On the last morning I ordered the spelt pancakes which I felt were a bit heavy (I think a quinoa flour or a nut flour would work better). The server was so concerned that he took them off the bill which I thought was very nice. For dinner, we had fabulous service. You'll even recieve an "amuse bouche" which was delicious! For lunch, my fiance ordered the grilled mahi sandwhich which was one of the best fish sandwhiches I have ever tasted. Whole grain bread, grilled mahi, onions, avocado, awesome! See photos on link at end of review.
One word of warning: When we checked in we were informed that our room was on the main floor directly across from the front desk and with windows opening right onto the front street. I asked if the hotel was full and the lady said no, but that we would have to pay another $30 dollars a night if we wanted to stay on the second or third floor which look out onto the patio (restaurant and plunge pool). We agreed to this, but were a little annoyed. Thankfully the manager of the hotel (Marcello, if I remember correctly) noticed this and the next day he informed us that there would be no rate change.
Upon arriving and exiting the hotel we were always greeted and Marcello was very helpful in arranging day plans for us as well as getting us a reduced rate for our taxi ride back to the airport.
The boutique in the hotel is very lovely, but also rather pricey. I would have loved to buy one of the dresses or some of the soaps and room sprays which are used in the rooms.
The whole hotel has a very organic feel to it which I love. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in San Pancho. I have posted photos on my blog:http://lindsaywotherspoon.com/2012/02/28/san-pancho/
