I read the bad reviews of this place, but ended up staying there anyway because it was so close to the BayPlay diving school where I was getting certified. When I phoned up, the woman warned me it was loud, the bathrooms were shared and there was no internet. So clearly they are used to people being disappointed. Since I went there knowing what I was getting, it was the perfect thing. The double bed rooms were all booked, so my boyfriend and I ended up with two twin beds. It was like being in University again! The shared bathrooms were clean and not crowded. The rooms were sparse, but perfect as a home base. The noise from the party downstairs was easy for me to ignore as I'm from New York City, but this is not the place to hear the ocean from your room.
If you are looking for that isolated experience, it is a very short drive to Port Nepean, which we did, and we were able to hear the water crash against the cliff and watch the moon and stars. It was cold, but worth it.
We were there December 29, 30 2011 (Wednesday and Thursday nights). The included breakfast is a quality buffet, but you are really paying for the view, and it is worth it. We got up at 8am and were the first ones there, so we had a beautiful, peaceful vista that I will always remember.
There is a beer garden downstairs that has long lines and the hotel staff is not always available to help you if you arrive late, so don't expect high quality service. But enjoy this place for what it is. A clean, comfortable hostel with good food and an incredible location.
Book early to get a room with an ensuite bathroom and with double bed.
