I travel extensively for work, and have a pretty good handle on what to expect from the hotel star ratings. This is NOT a 3 star hotel.
My family of 7 was driving back from Florida on Spring Break, and booked two rooms through Hotwire. I chose a 3 star hotel in an area that would be along the highway, near Knoxville. We checked in just before midnight.
It was right off the highway, and we could tell immediately that this is motel (outside rooms), not a traditional hotel. (see picture)
At check in, I asked if we had rooms with 2 queen beds (because it is unclear on Hotwire when booking), and was told yes. I asked about breakfast in the morning, and was told, "Maybe - I don't know if we got muffins in."
We went to our rooms, and the kids crashed out immediately. As we started to get settled, we noticed that the room was not very clean - hair on the sink, hair on the pillows; obvious (even in the relative dark) dirt including toenail clippings and a dirty sock on the floor. (see pictures) We were disgusted, but decided to flip the pillows over and make the best of it because there are no refunds through Hotwire, and the kids were already asleep.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The double (not queen) size bed was saggy and uncomfortable. The sheets and blankets were well worn. My wife and I tossed and turned all night. In the morning, I took a shower to try and revive. The towels were threadbare and felt like sandpaper.
We restocked our coolers with ice from a machine located in the atrium. Definitely in rough shape, and witnessed a maintenance man treating the hot tub with straight bleach - unmeasured Clorox poured from the bottle. I wish my photo captured it better - he turned just as it snapped.
On our way out (about 8am), stopped by the lobby to check out "breakfast". It was a card table with two candy jars of dry cereal and a cappuccino machine. (see picture) Whatever buffet breakfast that may have existed before is long gone.
If I had paid $39 for a roadside motel that is common in the area, I wouldn't be upset about the condition of the property. I would still expect a clean room, though.
I picked the highest rated hotel in the area looking for comfortable accommodations, and was very disappointed. This property had a couple of features that may have qualified it as a higher rated property in its heydey (meeting rooms, catering service, atrium with pool), but it no longer qualifies.
Another reviewer mentioned a brand-new 2-star property next door. I can't say much about it because we didn't stay there, but the rooms were all interior, and from pictures it appears to have a better breakfast spread. I jealously eyed the hotel as we drove out.
Ask for an inside room, and perhaps one that has been updated recently.

We in fact have indoor rooms facing the indoor pool/ hot tub and outside rooms facing the parking lot. Our maintenance men do not treat the hot tub or pool with only straight bleach and are cleaned on a daily basis. We always score high on our pool and hot tub inspections. Had the cleanliness of the room been brought to the front desk's attention we would moved the guest to another room or even cleaned the room for them. I am so sorry our hotel did not meet the expectations of the guest.
