. We made reservations months ago to stay May 26th thru May 30th in the Honeymoon Suite. We are not newlyweds, but this suite had lots of windows that the others do not have. I am a repeat customer and had stayed in one of the suites facing the pool two years ago. The suites were very dark and I knew the suite on the end (Honeymoon Suite) had lots of windows, so that is why I selected it. I booked on the internet and the pictures of the suite looked fine, only they neglect to tell you the bathroom is downstairs, the bedroom is upstairs.
I called from the San Antonio airport when we arrived to verify the Lodge’s physical address to put into the GPS in our rent car. Jennifer said we were about 1 1/2 hours away...so they knew we were coming. We checked in with Kay and went to our suite. Imagine our surprise that the air conditioner had not been turned on and Fredericksburg is experiencing the hottest weather it has had in years. Not only was it hot, I could not believe the suite layout. We voiced our dismay and tried to find other sleeping arrangement, but it was Memorial weekend and nothing is available. Kay offered us a refund, but we had flown in to San Antonio and had no other place to go. I told my husband, who was ready to go, that we could make the best of it since we had planned this trip for four months and had so much we wanted to do in Fredericksburg and Kerrville.
The only bathroom is downstairs and there are NO closets or armoire to hang clothes on the lower level of the suite. My husband muscled our bags upstairs on the spiral staircase only to discover the closet upstairs must double as a furnace! We opened the closet door and had to slam it shut because of the blast of heat coming from it. Seems a trap door has dislodged from its sole screw that is to hold it in place. The rods are so low that my capri pants were dragging on the closet floor. There were three hangers. It is a good thing I brought some from home! The trap door gets screwed back into place, but it does not really fit properly so it is still an oven in there. I hold my breath every time I have to open the closet. My husband decides to leave his bag downstairs and just drape his clothes all over the furniture. Looks good and orderly.
At night we turn on the porch light and open the shutters and leave the light on in the bathroom so we can see going down the stairs when we have to go to the toilet. I am trying to stay positive every time I have to go down to use the facility, but it is difficult. The first morning, we are woken up by two men shouting over the pool filter machine they are working on at 7 a.m.!!!! This is taking place right outside our bedroom window. We were so startled, we thought there must be an emergency so we leapt out of bed and ran downstairs to see what the commotion was about. I truly could not believe that these two men were so oblivious to their guests that they were shouting to each other over the pool filter noise like it was noon rather than sunrise!! I was under the impression that under common construction courtesy work started no sooner than 8 am. So much for relaxing and sleeping in.
I could go on, but the last straw was the two GIANT BLACK ROACHES that ran across our headboard and the one in the bathroom on Saturday evening. We called to change our flight to go home on Sunday rather than stay one more night as planned. Because we did not have internet to change our flight, Southwest charged us $75 apiece to do it by an agent. We let Sunday morning at 8 am and tried to find someone in the office to on avail. We left the key in the door. This stay has been a nightmare rather than the dream vacation I had envisioned. As a footnote I sent a letter to them and jennifer called me. She was rude, raised her voice and talked over me. I have been in the hotel business for 30 years and the people who run this establishment need training desperately. I would not recommend this B & B to my worst enemy.
There is not a best room.
