Just the name Holiday Inn Select doesn't conjure up an image of grandeur, but this hotel is in the middle of a transition to becoming a Crowne Plaza. The lobby is elegant with chandeliers and an impressive-looking restaurant (which I did not enter, so I can't comment much more on that). I booked through Hotwire and got an excellent rate; unfortunately I was given a smoking room though I called ahead to ensure that I wouldn't get a smoking floor. Once it's a Crowne, all smoking will be prohibited. Thankfully, I never once had an unpleasant odor in my room.
The room is decent-sized, the bed linens comfortable. The bathroom is definitely updated with nice teak wood and metal fixtures. Little things about the room made it quirky: the bedside telephone had to have been from the 1980s and microwave/coffee maker needs to be replaced with something more sleek. Yet, all of this is forgivable and understandable because of the transition, as I've stated before.
I was exhausted arriving at 5am from a LOOOOOOONG flight, and after catching up on some much-needed sleep, the room service breakfast arrived precisely on time and with a smile. The only gripe I have about the maid service was that my towels were not replaced for the three days I stayed there, even though I had deliberately placed them on the bathroom floor; also, the maid service did not remove my room service trays/dishes.
In short: the 'Crowne' upgrades make this hotel a good deal; but once the transition is complete, the price will surely go up at least $100 a night. Room service is wonderful and the cleaning staff needs to brush up on their skills quite a bit.
