We chose Bermuda for its reputation for being safe/friendly as we were travelling with a baby. Lived up to it - we left a wallet with credit cards and lots of cash on a bus stop bench and it was turned into the police station intact (including all the cash) within a few hours! Most people go out of the way to make you feel welcome. We found the island very safe, long as you don't rent a scooter, (locals tell us that 8 people have died and there have been dozens of serious injuries in just 6 months this year). That said, the trade off for such a pleasant, clean island experience is the price! Expect to pay a lot for accomodations and food. We picked 9 Beaches as it was a little less expensive than other options and the "cabanas" (think deluxe tents) sounded adventurous. We loved the beaches and coves at 9 Beaches - so many beautiful and secluded little beaches to discover, great swimming, and very very scenic. Great to be right on (or even literally over) the water. Staff very helpful and super friendly- our refrigerator stopped working and someone came to replace it within 20 minutes, also we left our leftovers from dinner at the bar and someone came all the way out to our cabana in a golf cart just to bring us 3 pieces of leftover pizza! Good watersports center with kayaks, scuba, snorkeling gear (bring your own snorkel/mask and save $30 rental fee). We loved sitting on our little deck and seeing ocean all around us, just steps from two beaches on either side. We had a really amazing cabana at the tip of a little rocky peninsula, truly a unique experience. The grounds were nicely landscaped. The pool is small, but really the many beautiful little beaches (and two larger beaches) are the main attraction at 9 Beaches. However, the "cabanas" are really tents and drawbacks include the noise - you hear the ocean waves, it can be downright deafening if it is windy outside, and rain/storms are only "romantic" until you can't sleep due to the racket! Also, when there is driving rain or high waves, water may get in under the door, or even waves splashing up through the floor in the case of the cabanas that are on stilts over the ocean. There is a big can of bug spray in each cabana (says "for flying or crawling insects" on the can - great), though we didn't have any problems with bugs in April. The furnishings are not as nice as you'd expect considering the expense - rugs were pretty heavily used and need to be replaced, there was only one tiny closet, and no dresser. There are baskets that slide under the bed and a couple of drawers in the coffee table to store your clothes. There is a small shower, no bath, and a small sink. Very small bathroom. This is not the resort to pick if you are looking for an elegant, luxurious experience, but really fun for families (there were plenty of kids of all ages) and people who would rather commune with nature than be pampered in a spa or eat in fine restaurants. The restaurant was good but not great, we only went once. The menu is kind of limited and there are not a lot of options on the resort - basically, you can eat at the bar (burger and fries about $12, pizza $14), at the restaurant (entrees upwards of $23, most are $28 and up), or room service (same prices as the bar food, but with a $4 delivery fee). Because of the lack of variety, I'd recommend not getting the all inclusive option. Breakfast buffet is included regardless, and you may want to have meals at restaurants at the nearby Dockyard area or in the little town near the resort anyway. My favorite - the Salt Rock Grill, a scenic 15 minutes walk from the resort entrance, has a 3 course early bird special for $23, and a great variety and quality of food including decent sushi. Almost anywhere you eat in Bermuda will cost around $90 for dinner for 2 with drinks. We just bought some rum at the airport duty-free shop on the way in to Bermuda to make our own Dark-n-Stormy's in our cabana, and picked up some food at the local grocery store for picnic lunches on the beach. Then we went out for a few nice dinners. This let us keep the expenses down and was really fun! So, in a nutshell, we will go back - we really loved the unique, funky atmosphere at 9 Beaches, and the beautiful, natural beaches and lush foliage. The resort is casual and relaxed. But don't go if you don't like the idea of being "close to nature" and will freak if you see a bug in your room, or if you are looking for elegance and fine amenities.

We have just returned from a weekend at 9 Beaches. The accomodations were very comfortable and clean, and provided the most awesome views. We were not sure what to expect at first, but we were pleasantly surprised. The Cabanas are not on top of each other, so you are able to some privacy. Our Cabana was on the edge of the Beach - some of them are actually in the water.

The staff provided incredible service with such a pleasing attitude. They were all very accomodating.

It was so lovely that we wanted to stay longer, however, ONE of us had to return to WORK!!

The food was great. Breakfast was a buffet with lots to choose from! We did not have lunch there, as we were touring the Dockyard area, played mini golf and just walked around sightseeing, relaxing etc. Dinner you could sit outside or inside, but make reservations - its very popular:) The selections on the menu were varied from steak, chicken, fish, pastas - the food was prepared exactly to order and was delicious.

The pool is lovely, however, the ocean is even better. There are a range of water sport activities available.

We spent 5 days and 4 nights at 9 Beaches recently. It was unlike any other vacation we've had. On 2 previous trips to Bemuda, we stayed at conventional hotels: the Hamilton Princess and The Reefs.
9 Beaches is a laid-back resort where you stay in soft-sided cabanas - ours was on stilts hugging the rocky coast with the surf breaking directly below us. Admittedly, it was noisy at times, especially with the fierce wind and rain that dampened our time there. Next time, I'd book a cabana on terra firma. We found the accommodations suitable for our needs. However, there were some things that may need attention.
Plastic cups for beverages in the cabanas were not wrapped in plastic protective covering...not very hygienic.
At the main restaurant, Hi Tide, even though they serve a palate cleanser between courses, they do not have cloth napkins. Thought this a bit unusual. The addition of cloth napkins, not the flimsy paper ones, would enhace the dining experience in our estimation. Complimentary breakfast was nice and menu items for lunch and dinner were varied. Although after seeing the same selections during our stay, we were looking for something new to try at dinner. We had chosen to go "all inclusive", so all our meals were on property.
There was only one internet station available to guests who did not bring their own computers. At times, there was more than a 15 min. wait to get to use it - perhaps make another internet terminal available somewhere else on the property?
Even though there are no tvs in the cabanas (there is one in the main lobby area and another one in "The Den"), it would have been nice to have one in the cabana to satiate my tv-addicted husband.
A note about the concierge - he was not very knowledgeable......maybe new to the job??
All-in-all we would go back to 9 Beaches and I would also recommend it to someone who is looking for a unique experience.

First, let me begin by stating 9 Beaches is NOT a 5 star resort. There isn’t a spa; there isn’t a priceless art collection, it lacks a mammoth pool with water features, it doesn’t abut a tournament length golf course and it doesn’t have high end suites. If you’re looking for “luxury”, this probably isn’t the resort for you.

9 Beaches is, however, a uniquely comfortable and enjoyable, if perhaps a bit off the beaten path, resort that should appeal to the young and young at heart who are somewhat adventurous.

The resort is situated near Somerset Village, Sandy, at the tip of a small West End peninsula known locally as Daniel’s Head. The shoreline is comprised of numerous beaches (seemed like more than nine… didn’t stop to actually count), ranging in size from postage stamp, affording intimate privacy, to the larger and more social beaches on either side of the main resort buildings.

Although the resort's rooms/cabanas/upscale tents are a bit small and on the rustic side, they’re clean, comfortable and, due to the raised pole construction of sail cloth material stretched over an aluminum frame, very unique. Many are over or right on the waters edge and each has a great ocean view from the abundant windows and private deck, as well as easy and often adjacent beach access.

There are no TVs, stereos or CD players in the individual cabanas, but the resort does provide wireless internet access with adequate signal strength in most cabanas. The resort’s main building has a comfortable restaurant with interior and exterior seating, as well as a lounge area with satellite TV and internet connected computer for those who need to stay in touch with the world.

The resort is somewhat isolated, so offsite dinning and entertainment requires, at minimum, a 15-20 minute vehicle trip to The Dockyard, which is the closest commercial area with multiple dinning and entertainment options. Transportation is available from the resort by scheduled mini-bus service at $5.00 per person each way, or by taxi at approximately $12-14 each way. The center of commerce in Bermuda is the city of Hamilton, which can be accessed via a twenty minute ferry ride from The Dock Yard, for an $8.00 per person roundtrip fare.

A few cons. Limited dinning & entertainment onsite, less than attentive service in the restaurant, small hot water heaters allowing little more than a quick rinse, easily audible noise from adjacent cabanas (due to fabric construction), lack of a music source in the cabanas (presumably to limit audible noise from adjacent cabanas) and the occasional wafting aroma of the nearby dairy farm. Gym facility has been remodeled but only equipped with a few tread mills and a single multi-position strength machine... no free weights or dumbbells.

Major gripes. The weather in mid-April ’08 sucked (constant rain, low 70’s) which is no fault of the resort. The only other onsite restaurant and lounge wasn’t yet open for the season, which precluded live entertainment as advertised, and for which I do hold the resort accountable. Most island events and many activities don’t occur / open until May.

The pros. Affordable rates, clean and comfortable waterfront rooms. Casual, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Friendly locals and staff. Resort provided pre-programmed cell phone. Beautiful white and pink sand beaches. A well stocked (if a bit pricey) grocery store within an easy ten minute walk of the resort. Less than a two hour flight from most of the U.S. east coast.

All in all, the 9 Beaches resort is well worth the very affordable rates, certainly when considering the beachfront location in Bermuda.
