My husband and I spent three nights at the Chateau des Ducs de Joyeuse in September 2007. Finding the hotel was easy (maps for auto-route and the hotel's web site gave local directions.) The town of Couiza is very, very small, but well located for site seeing. You can very easily get onto the routes needed to journey to many locations/sites. Having gone into Carcassone and experience its traffic jams we congratulated ourselves for choosing a hotel with an easy in-and-out location.

The Chateau is impressive and even more so when you're inside its gates. Since the hotel is an old castle, there aren't any elevators to the floors. You need to plan using the original circular stone stairways in the corner turrets to get to your room. We were there during the low season, so perhaps in high season there are more staff available that could assist with the baggage. For us, we had to lug our own luggage. Our original room was on the third floor, but we felt it was too small for our three night stay and still keep a happy marriage! So we upgraded our room and stayed in the "suite" (which is one of the rooms featured on the web site). The room and modern bathroom were very large and comfortable. (Note the first room would have been fine if we were staying one night. The bathroom was small and had little counter space,)

Again, the town is very small (I believe there was one restaurant), so I would strongly recommend to dine at the hotel's wonderful restaurant. We took advantage of the room/meal plan. This plan includes breakfast and dinner, however the dinner menu is a set menu, but the staff did accommodate some substitutions. The food was inventive, nicely prepared and delicious. The dinning staff were attentive and friendly. I should mention that few staff members spoke English - and I am not expecting that they do, after all I am limited with my french! (We actually found this area in France as a whole to be more limited with spoken english.) So I would caution people not to confuse a language barrier as unfriendly. Again, our experience was the hotel had friendly, helpful staff.

The breakfast selection ranges from breads to meats and cheeses. The server constantly refreshed juices, coffee and food. A great way to start the day.

We didn't use the pool because of the time of year.

Overall I would recommend the hotel for its charm and usual accommodations, value with meal plan, and location, location, location.

“Great Place”

Chateau des Ducs de Joyeuse

We stayed at this hotel on a Monday night, we knew the restaurant would be shut when we booked so we just drove a couple of miles down the road to another hotel for a meal.
The place looks great and is very peaceful however a bit run down. We had the cheapest room that was clean however quite small.
There appeared to be no daytime facilities however the pool looked great and with the river at the back of the hotel would be a great place to relax.
It is close to the town and not totally isolated so not to far to travel for anything.
The breakfast was reasonable although a bit pricey, as i said before the restaurant was closed so I cannot comment.
All in all it was OK but I would not stay again.

“Fabulous medieval castle!”

Wow! This place is amazing - it is a real medieval castle that has been successfully converted into a lovely hotel.
When we arrived at the castle we were not sure about the surrounding area - it appears to be next to a school and school playing field which didn't quite fit into the whole scene. However once inside the courtyard you forget all of that and just look around in awe.
The grand reception area is in one of the turretts on the ground floor and we were given our key to our room which was on the second floor. We chose the cheapest room at 103 euros per night but they do have suites in the turretts for around 180 euros per night which are probably fabulous. When we got to our room it was a little on the small side and only had a shower not a bath. We had been travelling all day and I longed for a soak in a bath so we went back to reception and she offered us an alternative room overlooking the courtyard for 109 euros - this was perfect!
We booked a table in the restaurant and had a gorgeous meal followed by a drink in the bar after dinner - this unfortunately was shut but they gladly opened it up for us but we were then the only ones in there so it lacked a little in people atmosphere.
Overall the hotel was great and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I especially recommend the hotels special cocktail as a pre-dinner aperatif
