Hotel Appearance and Location
The outlying hotel location is probably reflected in it’s very reasonable price, there is a shuttle bus service down to Salou seafront but we found the minibus to be usually over popular and ended up taking the walk down….which in hot weather can be gruelling.
I would suggest that anyone with mobility issues would find this walk to be too much.
The hotel has a pleasant enough appearance from the road and is generally in quite good condition from the outside.
Reception and Public Areas
Very tidy and spacious in reception, with reception staff that are particularly good and helpful at all times. The command and use of English language by reception staff, and hotel staff in general was excellent.
The restaurant area was in good condition with tables and chairs and other fixtures very smart. The downside being the heat lamps in the hot food displays which were not up to the job of keeping food trays hot enough, there is a definite need for upgrade of heat lamp food displays as they are dated and not sufficient.
Rooms
We had Two adjoining rooms, one of which was not in good condition at all, the other was not too bad. We decided to swap around rooms after the first night as the toddler we had with us kept tripping over the broken laminate flooring that was badly damaged from water flooding from the bathroom….not at all good enough in a room that is let out to guests, who could easily trip on this uneven surface.
We both (rooms) had a few problems with the bathrooms, the shower curtain in our room just wasn’t wide enough to stop the shower flooding the floor every time it was used and our bathroom constantly stank of stale urine, which was not down to bad cleaning as the room cleaning was constantly of a very high standard.
Reasonable beds and the rooms although small are well equipped and bedding was very clean, I do however feel that as the vast majority of guests are from Britain that SKY channels should be considered in the hotel rooms, this is fast becoming the norm in many European hotels we have stayed in over the last couple of years, we could only get one BBC channel in one of the rooms but nothing but Spanish in the other.
Cleaning
Exceptional throughout the hotel, tables constantly cleared in the bar and restaurant.
Always someone to be seen cleaning windows, doors and floors.
Pool area very clean, with whole pool patio area and sunbeds hosed down every morning and pool cleaned thoroughly.
In short excellent….
Food
As with the hotel location, the food was reflected in the holiday price. Generally always something suitable for our group, lunchtime often better than evening meal.
Very acceptable quality considering the holiday was quite cheap.
Only downside being fluctuating food temperature due to dated food display heat lamps…easily rectified with an upgrade in display equipment.
Hot drinks not hot enough!….probably for fear of guests spilling hot liquids on themselves and causing a fuss, but coffee really needs to much hotter to enjoy it with breakfast or after a meal. Once again more a niggle rather than a major complaint and a problem easily rectified by the hotel management.
Great restaurant staff…..
Entertainment
On the whole the entertainment was very good, the entertainment staff were excellent and went out of their way to keep everyone involved and happy. However….Bingo!
Why the need to shove bingo down everyone’s throats on a non stop basis?, they sell bingo tickets constantly, even disturbing guests attempting to relax by the pool with bingo ticket sales.
When I asked a very nice member of the entertainment staff why….they said it was management policy.
Bingo every afternoon, an hour’s bingo every night….Bingo, Bingo, Bingo!!!
It’s a shame really because the entertainment staff are very good, the main DJ and compare Tom was particularly proficient.
The evening shows were of a very good standard, if you could still manage to stay awake through the Hour’s bingo session that preceded them every night….shame really as it made the hotel look very 1970’s Hi De Hi holiday camp at times.
Recommend or Not?
On reflection I would say the Hotel Villamarina Club is good for families with Primary or Pre School children, it is a very reasonable price and for the money the food and drink is very acceptable.
Entertainment is good….shame about the overkill on the bingo.
Rooms are more Travelodge than Ritz, but then again that is reflected in the tariff. But over the winter they should look very seriously at improving bathrooms and maybe giving the rooms a spruce up with a lick of paint.
The winning formula is their staff, and credit to the management for maintaining the high standard on that front.
