We stayed 16th-23rd October 2009 on a Thomsons package.

The hotel has recently been refurbished in a minimalist style, which seems very austere to start with but it grows on you after a couple of days. All the public areas and bedrooms were kept very clean and the building generally was in very good condition. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful which was in contrast to the restaurant and bar staff who just didn’t seem too interested in anything, especially serving you.

On the plus side the hotel has a good location down a quiet side street with plenty of parking but it only takes a genuine 2 minutes to walk to the beach. It’s only a short transfer from the airport and is off the main flight path so although you can sometimes see aircraft in the far distance we could never hear them.

This hotel has an official 3 star rating and has applied for 4 Star status and in all the brochures it’s rated as a 4 star. However in our experienced based on hotels rated similarly by the same tour operator it falls far short of 4 star and is only a low 3 star. The main reasons for this are the food and the pool area which are simply not good enough.

The best way to describe the food is works canteen, it was edible but very boring and predictable. Stake and kidney pie and chicken and mushroom pie are hardly 4 star menu items. There was usually just one vegetable provided apart from potatoes and chips and invariable these were pre-processed and not fresh. The show cooking was a halfhearted attempt and mostly consisted of warming something up or carving a meat joint. The starters were a salad selection, with the same cheese and meat every night and two different soups both of which were dishwater. The breakfast was identical for 7 days with the hot breakfast items being very poor quality and the pastries limited to the same awful croissants and prepacked fairy cakes.

The photographs of the pools can only be described as a masterpiece of illusion. The indoor pool is little more than a footbath, one stroke end to end! The outside pool is portrayed as a lagoon surrounded by palm trees, in reality it is lost in the middle of a grey concrete yard with a few trees around the hotel perimeter. It’s all functional but there is nothing attractive about it at all.

If you are looking for a clean hotel with easy access to a very good beach then the Rey Don Jamie fits the bill but if you are expecting a 4 star experience which corresponding service and restaurant you will be disappointed.

The hotel is supposed to be a 3* hotel ( even though they charge 4* prices to stay here £400 each) but I would grade the hotel no better than a 1*. The rooms are very basic and old looking. We were there for a week and the bedding was not changed in that time. The food in th restaruant was eddable but very repetative. The waiter service was very slow in clearing the tables and plates soon mounted up on tables, peolpe were even clearing their own dishes. We also found that a lot of the dishes and plates were dirty, with scum rings around the edges, so make sure you check. The Hotel charges 21euros per week for a room safe + a deposit (we have never pay that in the canaries). We filled out a complaints form with our rep stating why we not happy with the Hotel and she handed a copy to the Hotel manager. She told us that they management would probably have a word with us, but no one ever did. The Entertainment team were very friendly and were alway on the go with some game or another. The best thing about the Hotel was leaving it behind.

the hotel only seemed interested in the irish guests who were there for a 'hooley' as they called it. we complained to the manageress who simply didn't want to know. if you are looking for a peaceful holiday don't go to this hotel as the entertainers drive you mad all day shouting stupid games to join in. the so called evening entertainment left a lot to be desdired and you have to enjoy bingo every night , you had no choice as any decent entertainment did't start till eleven thirty in the television bar and that wasn't very often. we found the bar staff very ignorant when it came to serving the fully inclusive guests. quite a number of us would have returned home earlier if a flight had been available.

After reading some reviews,we didnt really know what to expect from this hotel. But we were really pleased with the standards here.We stayed on a half board basis and the food was excellant plenty of choices for both breakfast and dinner.the staff in the dining room were fantastic and very friendly.the hotels public areas have just been refurbished and are very open abd bright with modern furnishing and lighting.the reception staff were great, the hotel manageress was lovely always smiling and cheerful.the rooms are a little tired but are clean and comfy.we enjoyed a really great time here.
Bar prices are quite steep, with the pound being so low but you can upgrade on check in to all inclusive for 20 euros a day. This is well worth doing in my opinion.

I spent a week here in September. The hotel was lovely and I could not fault the food - plenty of choice. My single room was adequate and clean. The entertainment staff were wonderful. There were very few children there but they got the adults involved in the activities. I was very impressed with the disabled facilities in the pools. Unfortunately 2 days after arriving the hotel was set for 'Hooley in the Sun' and around 300 holiday makers arrived from Ireland. Their evening entertainment was great. However they returned in the early hours of the morning singing and shouting in the corridors and there were very many complaints. These were mature people in their 50's and 60's who should have known better. I would certainly return as it was a friendly hotel but would check they were not staying there. Santa Ponsa was and ideal resort.
