We stayed 16th-23rd October 2009 on a Thomsons package.
The hotel has recently been refurbished in a minimalist style, which seems very austere to start with but it grows on you after a couple of days. All the public areas and bedrooms were kept very clean and the building generally was in very good condition. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful which was in contrast to the restaurant and bar staff who just didn’t seem too interested in anything, especially serving you.
On the plus side the hotel has a good location down a quiet side street with plenty of parking but it only takes a genuine 2 minutes to walk to the beach. It’s only a short transfer from the airport and is off the main flight path so although you can sometimes see aircraft in the far distance we could never hear them.
This hotel has an official 3 star rating and has applied for 4 Star status and in all the brochures it’s rated as a 4 star. However in our experienced based on hotels rated similarly by the same tour operator it falls far short of 4 star and is only a low 3 star. The main reasons for this are the food and the pool area which are simply not good enough.
The best way to describe the food is works canteen, it was edible but very boring and predictable. Stake and kidney pie and chicken and mushroom pie are hardly 4 star menu items. There was usually just one vegetable provided apart from potatoes and chips and invariable these were pre-processed and not fresh. The show cooking was a halfhearted attempt and mostly consisted of warming something up or carving a meat joint. The starters were a salad selection, with the same cheese and meat every night and two different soups both of which were dishwater. The breakfast was identical for 7 days with the hot breakfast items being very poor quality and the pastries limited to the same awful croissants and prepacked fairy cakes.
The photographs of the pools can only be described as a masterpiece of illusion. The indoor pool is little more than a footbath, one stroke end to end! The outside pool is portrayed as a lagoon surrounded by palm trees, in reality it is lost in the middle of a grey concrete yard with a few trees around the hotel perimeter. It’s all functional but there is nothing attractive about it at all.
If you are looking for a clean hotel with easy access to a very good beach then the Rey Don Jamie fits the bill but if you are expecting a 4 star experience which corresponding service and restaurant you will be disappointed.
