“Good place to stay at. We stayed there twice.”
This is a hotel with little apartments in it, you get a bedroom, nice bathroom, a living room within which there is a kitchenette with microwave, cooker, cattle, fridge, dishes, etc. All rooms have a sea view.
My wife and I initially stayed there two years ago (in 2008) and we loved it so much that we came back again this year. The location is great. When you get out of the hotel, the beach is on your left hand side (a minute or two walking). On your right hand side is Hyper Dino Express grocery shop (30 seconds walk). Before you cross the street towards Hyper Dino, on your right hand side is a square, area which works all night. You have have bars and excellent fast food there. So if you wake up hungry at 2 o'clock after midnight, worry you not, a great pepito for 3 Euros will do just fine.
Canary is practically Africa, so cockroaches are 5 cm long. Two years ago, Las Dunas Hotel was absolutely cockroach free. This year, however, we saw one, but s/he was probably poisoned before because it was very slow and my flip-flop neutralized it properly without any problems.
Gaucho is also close to the Las Dunas, a bit more expensive then restaurants on the beach, but quality and quantity is superb. A dinner for two with drinks and tips is a bit less then 50 Euros. But you can't sleep after such a huge meal. But it didn't stop me from coming back. A grilled lamb is a grilled lamb after all, if you know what I mean (try Gorro Blanco and La Syrena. They are on the beach. La Syrena has menus, cheap and very good. My favorite menu is on Thursdays, chicken soup, grilled sole and ice cream).
Now, the staff. Pure A. A++ for the cleaning ladies. Faultless.
As for the other guests, I saw all types of people: families, youngsters, gays, elderly people... Everybody. I mean, we went there in August, so we could swim in the Oceano Atlantico alright, but if you are going in December, you might want to check spas so that you can enjoy during the day and take a walk in the evening, lightly dress of course.
We too had Sirocco from Sahara. Boy, what an experience! But you switch on the fan and after a while you are OK. Mind you, it is always a bit colder on your balcony then on the street, so don't judge the weather based on how it feels on your balcony.
If you are coming from the airport by taxi (30. something euros) you tell them Playa Del Ingles, Centro Comercial Metro. If they don't know it, you tell them Koka once you entered Playa Del Ingles. Koka is the hotel which can be seen from anywhere. Once you are in front of the Koka, you ask for Hyper Dino, which should be from your right hand side. Then you just go down the street and Las Dunas is at the end of that street on your left.
From the beach you can take a walk to Mas Palomas by the sea, it take an hour. Or you can go by a taxi, and it's a bit less then 5 Euros, 4 point. something. In Mas Palomas women tend to wear a bit more classy things but you are welcome anywhere dressed for the beach.
When you are shopping, immediately ask "How much is this with the discount?", and then inspect all shops for the same item, because we bought some thing in the posh Mas Palomas cheaper then in Playa Del Ingles. Much cheaper.
There was absolutely no crime apart from one suspicious guy at the airport who, when spotted, entered a bus and then got out. Typical, really. First he cruises around you and when you let him know that you know what he is, he gets to the first bus so that you think he is just some dude, but those pickpockets always get out of the bus after some seconds. But you could leave your stuff on the beach, no problems. Now, being extra careful can't hurt you but it's not like in Barcelona, which is full of thieves. No mosquitos in Playa Del Ingles as well.
