I just got back from a one week stay in Tenerife. We stayed at the excellent Colon Guanahani which is located by Playa Adeje.
Going to Tenerife during the winter, we decided to go to the South of the island because it's much warmer and sunnier there. It was the right choice (although some areas and hotels in the North look really nice, too). We rented a car and drove to Puerto de la Cruze and to the North coast three times. I rained heavily twice whereas in the South the weather was always nice. So, if you go to Tenerife during the winter months I would recommend searching for a hotel in the South (mainly Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, Fanabe/Playe Adeje, Playe del Duque (not sure about spelling)). Anyways, the hotels around Playa de las Americas are rather monstrous - the whole area looks like a Disney touristy city on a small island. However, the area around Fanabe is really nice. The hotels are mostly high standard and the whole area is much quieter.
The hotel Colon Guanahani proved to be a very good choice. The room was really nice - high 4star standard for a Southern European country. It was rather big and even had an extra door between the bedroom and bathroom/front door so you can easily avoid any unnecessary noise from outside/in front of the door. There was a nice size balcony with table and chairs. We chose a room that faces the street (we thought that the extra 200 something euros were too much for one week). The street in front of our room was not really busy and especially during the night it calmed down a lot. We always had the balcony door open and weren't really disturbed by traffic noise (rather by the band playing in the neighbouring hotel).
The food at the Colon Guanahani was what I call perfect. Breakfast was all that you could dream of and dinner even better. We had fresh fish from the grill every day - also the fish varied daily so did the various seafood salads. There was also plenty of meat, differents sorts of bread, salads, pasta, potatoes, sauces, ice cream, fruits, cheese, ...
There are two pools in the backyard of the hotel. I think that they are rather small when the hotel is full. However they are heated which is necessary during the winter months. Due to the fact that the beach (which is a really nice one, by the way) is only 5 minutes (per pedes :-)) we didn't really care that much about the pool.
All in all, I can highly recommend this hotel. It is worth its price if you enjoy good food and want to be located centrally but not in a loud environment. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this hotel to families with many children for there is absolutely no special entertainment program for anyone.
