I wrote the following letter to the General Manager 30 days ago and have received no response, so I am posting it here as a warning to diners to beware.
"I want to write to you to explain why my brother and I left no tip on our $321 dinner bill last Tuesday, May 8th.
We were staying with friends on Lake Powell and booked dinner at your hotel.
We were most impressed by the fabulous location of the hotel and its tranquility. We sat at a table overlooking the superb swimming pool and ordered aperitifs. My brother ordered a Gin Martini. After quite a long wait, the waiter brought him a gin cocktail with some kind of red cordial in it. He reiterated that he had requested a Gin Martini, and eventually the self-described “house mixologist” brought what he had requested. Wouldn’t it have been better for the mixologist to request clarification before mixing the drink?
We were pleasantly surprised by the food prices but rather astounded at the seeming five-time mark-ups on the wine list. We had a glass each of Sancerre with the excellent appetizers, and ordered the $90 Pinot Noir. When our entrees were served, no server bothered to pour the Pinot. I ordered the Veal special medium rare. It arrived very well done.
When our bill arrived, we were surprised to find that we had been charged $190 for the $90 wine, for which the waiter didn’t seem to be very apologetic.
My London-based brother travels very extensively around the globe, staying at five-star resorts, and was really surprised at the poor service that we had received. I was acting as his banker for the trip, and he insisted that no tip was deserved."
