Having lived in Brattleboro for several years, I can safely say that McNeils is some of the best microbrew I have had in my life. Everything on tap is very tasty and this pub is a must for anyone visiting southern Vermont for the first time. Simple but fun design and darts are the extra selling points of this bar but beware : the only problem is during the day and afternoons it is a frequent hangout of overzealous liberals who live to mock the local news and anything else in the region. Try to avoid these people, they are just annoying. They think that the crappy left-wing paper is the only POS worth reading in town, they are narrow-minded and not worth waiting time debating. I try to remain nonpartisan in these reviews and my political stance tends to be pretty close to the norm in Brattleboro, but these people are just rude and mean ... anyone looking for a good beer, come once these people leave. You will be safe avoiding these folks anytime after 8 pm. or so.
Other than that, Ray makes a great beer and most nights this is a great local hangout worthy of a trip. The bar typically opens at 4 pm, but visitors have better options in town until the spoiled liberals leave the bar. Again, I tend to agree with them on most political stances, I just can't stand smug 'progressives' with their heads up their butts. Other than that, the bartenders are very good and the beer is excellent. The atmosphere is second to none in town and most busy nights include a free band. Ask for a growler, you won't be disappointed.
While you're at McNeils, see if the Ol' Ringworm is on tap, it's one of the best beers I've put in my tummy. If you like lighter beers, try the ruby red or blonde bombshell.
