My wife and I stayed here for a long, long day while visiting Charlottesville with some friends who had a medical appointment at UVA Medical Center. From the minute we walked in the door it was bad. In the midst of checking in we had to stand there for probably 15 minutes while one of the desk clerks was giving a training session to another clerk who was having trouble with the computer. The desk staff, while not outright rude, were less than friendly.
Later in the evening, my wife turned down the bed covers and found candy wrappings and part of an earring in her bed. One of the pillow cases was very dirty, and had make-up and something else? on it. The bed had obviously not been changed from the previous occupants. She called the desk and asked if we could get some clean sheets and pillowcases, but the clerk didn't know how to find them and said she couldn't leave the desk as she was the only one on duty. After some 20 minutes or so of calls back and forth the clerk said she would move us to another room. When I went into that room it had used towels on the bathroom floor and had obviously not been cleaned. Back I went to the desk to inform the clerk that room was unacceptable. She then assigned us to another room which was next to the elevator, which I declined.
Ultimately, after about 45 minutes, and at 11:15 PM, we ended up hauling our belongings down three floors to a different room. While the sheets and pillow cases appeared clean, there was no shampoo or other amenities in the room, the shower bar was ripped out of the wall at one end, and the sink took several minutes to drain.
Well, by now you get the idea. Next morning as we were checking out and after I explained the whole sordid experience to the day clerk, she printed out my bill showing that I was charged for an upgraded room. I pointed out that I had accepted the second room only as a second (or maybe third) resort and that I certainly hadn't requested it. Again, in the middle of the check-out, I had to wait while the clerk took several phone calls. It took her about 15 minutes to figure out how to change the billing and to give me a discount or our problems (which she listed on the bill as "not happy with stay". What an understatement !
Bottom line- avoid this hotel at all cost. The management either is totally incompetent or just don't care. Unfortunately, because of its proximity to the medical center this hotel gets a lot of business from people who have spouses or family who are undergoing treatment and the last thing they need is hassle from such an experience.
I can honestly say that of more than 1000 hotels I have stayed in all over the world, this was the absolute worst. What a pity for such an otherwise wonderful city as Charlottesville.
