My hubby and I travel on a minimal budget so I was thrilled to find accommodations that were both inexpensive and highly recommended by other travelers. While I take exception to the term "Inn" in the name, it was a good place. There are 2 bldgs; one is the "inn". It's a small house that has been bought by a small group of people with the intention of creating both a hostel and separate guest house. The guest house offers 3 private rooms but am not sure if each room has it's own bathroom since we stayed in the other little bldg adjoining the house.I did go into the common area over there and there was a bathroom in the public area. The hostel, the other bldg. slept 8 in bunks, two of which offered a double on the bottom. I have stayed in several hostels and I must say this is probably the nicest. Both residences were quite clean including the bathroom of the hostel. This is the only drawback to the hostel; it offers only 1 bathroom for potentially 8 people. As the hostel slept the full quota the night we were there, I was concerned about that but needn't have been. As everyone seemed to get up at different times, I had to wait just a few minutes, once, to use the bathroom in the morning. It was very quiet and a pleasant walk to several restaurants located in this residential neighborhood. Toast and jam, coffee and fruit was a good breakfast, provided by Alexander House, till we actually got out and went to a little cafe a couple of hours later for a full breakfast.
When we need a motel again in Charlottesville, we'll stay here. The price can't be beaten and it was well worth it. I found the mattress firm but my hubby thought it was hard. Still, a minor issue.

So glad you found us! Its true, we do struggle with what to call our "Inn", as a way to distinguish it from the hostel's shared bedroom accommodations. I think we settled on that name because the rooms are private and it does have more of a guest house feel to it. And yes, there is only one shared bathroom in the Inn; the rooms don't have their own private bath.

It is possible to rent the whole Inn (or the whole hostel), or you can just rent one of the private rooms or hostel beds and share the public space with other guests. Hostel guests are welcome to use the Inn's public spaces, as well; kitchen, living room, and dining room as well as the public computer and land-line telephone. Free wireless access in both buildings! Hope to see you again down the road....the Alexander House Crew.
