The drive to Jamestown from Williamsburg (20 minutes & scenic) was gorgeous. There are beaches along the way and it's very beautiful.
Once there, we were a little confused on "which" Jamestown we wanted to see (he gave us a list of 3 places - battlefields, ships, original settlement). We went to the original settlement.
They were doing archeological digs and there were lots of things on display. This made it a "cool" factor and my 10 year old. We had no idea what a hogshead was (included in the pamplet) but you will figure it out when you visit.
We saw the old church (one of 3 that were there and made the noon service - 10 minutes), the old cross (brought here when the Queen visited), the statue of Pocahontas, and one of John Smith (not a very nice man, mean actually ;o), the monument (built in 1907) and the visitor center where they have many of the dig "treasures" on display. My 10 year old really enjoyed the visit. His favorite part was hearing about them finding colonial weapons and armor in an old well. He realized that America was going to be 400 years old and the history "came alive" for him. He liked learning about the Powhatan Indians and hearing about the start of slavery, the disease, starvation and battles with the indians - all the hard things they had to survive (and not many did). It's a history trip none of us will ever forget and it only took about 4 hours to see.
They have a picnic area - so go and enjoy. Kids were free - Adults were $8 (cheaper than a movie) and well worth it.
