Based on the reviews we read about the restaurant at Domaine de Capelongue and that it was given two stars by Michelin we booked lunch (which can be done on their website) for a Friday afternoon. From the four perfect pre-meal morsels to the sweets we were served after our meal we were not disappointed.
The setting is also spectacular. The dining room overlooks a large garden full of lavender, sunflowers, cypress trees and sculptures and sits high on a bluff overlooking the hilltop village of Bonnieux.
There are many options for lunch - one of the two tasting menus (at €190 and €140 each), a large a la carte selection together with a special lunch only menu comprised of selections from the other menus. At €58 it is an absolute steal particularly when the additional presentations are added in (it is only available weekdays)
I chose the special lunch menu and it was fantastic. However, as noted above, we first began with four very tasty starters - a small fish cake, a delightfull little pizza with truffle shavings, a mushroom mousse and a tiny cone with still yet unknown filling. The amuse bouche was one of the best I've ever had - four perfectly cooked escargots in warm olive oil and butter and garnished with local windflowers.
The special lunch menu is set so you must go with the chef's whims. The appetizer was the veal done in a crispy florentine style - perfectly cooked and not too greasy and garnished with fresh peas. The main course was a small chicken thigh and breast meat garnished with tiny roasted potatoes, miniature waffle chips and a simple side salad. The raspberry dessert with custard and sugar "glass" was a perfect way to finish the meal. But wait, we were also presented with five sweets to finish off the meal - a pistachio macaroon, a perfect merengue with a cherry stuffed in the middle, a chocolate and an absolutely incredible praline tarte (apparently from Lyon).
Service was generally good though our waitress made no attempt to help us with the menu when it was clear we were struggling with it (other members of the staff were most helpful). The chef visited our table on several occasions and even gave my wife a free appetizer (containing truffles, avocado, cheese, etc.) as he didn't want her to be without a course when my son and I were munching through the special lunch menu.
Finish your meal off with coffee on the terrace and enjoy the view!
