There are at least 3 UK tour operators that offer ski holidays at this hotel, Crystal, Neilson and Ski France. It is worth shopping around. We got a good deal with Ski France through Iglu, so for what we paid, we can’t complain as to value for money. It was half board for 7 days, 2 for 1 lift passes and probably £100-200pp cheaper than other operators. We were in Standard rooms which were adequate, albeit a little TLC is needed. Lots of storage, drawers, shelves and hanging space so made up for the room being a little smaller. The beds were a bit narrow. Bath was not full size but shower had good pressure. Nice balcony views but overlooks neighbour’s room, so beware and draw at least your net curtains! The workmanship for small repairs and odd jobs throughout the hotel is not great…The downside is that there are no lifts and we were on the second floor :( Our room was clean enough and towel changes every day if needed and beds made every day. No hairdryer or kettle/beverages but small toiletries provided. Used tissues provided one day to substitute toilet rolls as there was no toilet roll delivery that day...
There were a lot of French guests during our stay who kept themselves to themselves. The hotel lacked a bit of atmosphere, unlike a Clubhotel type holiday. Ski France themselves were non-existent, other than greet and handing over the lift passes. Certainly would not recommend them if it is your first ski holiday and need some help with ski and resort information. I believe other operators provided some ski guiding. We didn’t have the best flight times with Monarch either, arriving late the first night via Grenoble (not the nearest airport), so had cold meats/salad for dinner. We found the bar/lounge area large and comfortable with TV and a pool table. The ski/boot room is not so convenient, outside and down the steps. We didn’t use the small sauna which looked ok, with a shower area and lockers nearby. The gym next to the sauna was not that well equipped and a bit dated.
Location of the hotel is very much as everyone has said so far, ski in and ski out. Well almost, as you have to walk across an access road and then pass the side of the block in front first. Although it was very warm when we were there (mid March), it was still possible to ski down to the main Mottaret lifts on the green run next to the hotel. En route, it was bit slippery walking in places but much of the snow had melted during our stay.
Skiing back has two alternatives, the Furet (blue – but don’t miss the entrance to the hotel) or all the way back to the main lifts in Mottaret and take the beginner’s/kiddies’ travellator up (on the green run which you would have skied down from the hotel). It conveniently stops at the same level as the hotel. We hired from the ski hire next door which was handy, had a friendly service and 20% discount by using vouchers at the hotel reception.
I would recommend the Plan Des Mains mountain restaurant. We had a great lunch in the restaurant (they also have a snack section). The pomme frites were utterly yummy! A bit pricey but worth it. The ‘yellow’ coloured bread was to die for.
A minute walk from the hotel, you can take the small gondola up and down to Mottaret which links the self-catering Le Hameau apartments higher up the slope from the hotel. There are some shops, ski hire, supermarket (handy for bottled water, crisps) etc. that serve the Le Hameau. There is also a bus service to and from Meribel at the gondola station near the hotel.
As for the food in the hotel, breakfast was OK – same every day – cold meats, cheese, yoghurts but don’t try the cold dry crepes, just stick to the croissants! Also had option of scrambled eggs (which tasted better than they looked), cardboard bacon and frankfurters. Hot water for tea was lukewarm in the flask with a choice of tea.
Dinner was not great. In addition to the limited menu, there is the day’s specials which is usually the better option. The soup was very much the same every day, best parts were starters (esp the Carpaccio) and the deserts (except for the cheese platter which looked like the same cheese from breakfast!). We didn’t think much of the mains, in fact they were disappointing. The mains were dry (duck), grisly (steak), tough boil in bag? (cod) and as if dished out half an hour before, left to keep warm and then served. However, the table setting made up for it as tables were nicely laid every day.
The best laugh of the holiday was when we had the ‘fruit’ option for desert one evening. Anticipating something exotic (or even tinned fruit salad), we were presented with a whole apple on a small plate each, garnished with a dried up half slice of kiwi and strawberry on the side and a knife and fork to cut the apple with. It wouldn’t have been so bad if the apples weren’t bruised!
If you pay what we did, we would still consider it good value…fed, watered, bed for the night in undeniably the largest and best ski area in Europe if not the world!
