“Very satisfied”

Hotel Grotta

We just returned from Greece. We only visited one island among other places and that's Naxos. Though most people have been telling us that the islands are just for tourists, we decided not to listen to them. We just want to say "been there done that". And we were not disappointed.
When we were there, we stayed at the Hotel Grotta based on various reviews posted here and it's proximity to the bus station and port. It's really nice and the owner/manager was very hospitable. Everything that was stated before by previous visitors (in the posting), we've experienced. We arrived late at night as there was a strike at the Piraeus port and we had to board at Rafina later in the day. I e-mail the hotel and had my hotel in Athens called them to confirm the time we would arrive. Some one from the hotel (it was Dimitri) came and picked us up from the port, just the two of us. When we got to the hotel, we were offered the welcome drink of their local liquor, and information about what to do on the island including the hard to come by bus schedule. Dimitri never rushed us to our room though I was sure that he wanted to call it a day. We took his advice and visited a few villages the next day.
The room is very clean. They are simple but that's okay - it's not a luxury resort hotel. The hotel itself is very clean. For the price we pay, we were happy. The other staff (I think they were family members) are very friendly. Both Dimitri and Nikoletta speak English. I think Nikoletta also speaks French. The breakfast was fine. Remember, it's not a 5-star hotel in the city where you would find a mile long local breakfast food, and western ones. They offer fresh bread, yoguart, ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs etc. and that's fine with me.
From the hotel, we walked everywhere. The bus station is only 10 min slow walk away. There's a super market and a mini mart close by. You can walk to that "door frame" monument.
One thing though, if you want shampoo, and better soap, I suggest you bring your own.
Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay - clean, well fed in the morning, its location, thehospitality of the family who runs the hotel, and they accept credit card.

My comments are going to echo a great many of the others already written - my friend and I stayed here in late April, 2008, and were blown away by the sheer warmth and hospitality of Hotel Grotta! We booked directly, and for the price, were expecting clean, basic rooms...

However - first we were welcomed at the pier, welcomed to the hotel with a free drink of the native Naxos Citron liquor, and we ended up with a sea view of the Apollo Arch, plus all the amenities including a spotless bathroom. Toss in an included great spread for breakfast every morning, some loaner laptops to use for free internet in the comfy lobby, and even some board games to wile away the rainy afternoon - we were set!

The one downside is that the jacuzzi was not operational since it was still the end of the low season - but that would have been the icing on the cake :)

Thanks Hotel Grotta!!

We did the island hoping tour this past summer, and we found Naxos to be our favorite island of the bunch. Santorini and Mykonos were very touristy and expensive. A large part of why we enjoyed Naxos was due to the incredible hospitality we received at Hottel Grotta. The hotel truly has the warm feel of a family run place and was very nicely remodeled recently, with nice clean rooms. Th hotel is perched a top a hill with superb views of the ocean and the small town. Dimitris, the owner, went out of his way to be so kind to us. We had an issue with our Ferry being cancelled at the last minute and even though he had so much going on at the time, Dimitris went out of his way to find us some alternatives of getting on another ferry. I can't thank Dimitris enough for his kind hospitality. And the breakfast is amazing!

“Enjoyed”

Hotel Grotta

13 Nov 2007

We were a group of 13 people who stayed at the Grotta for three nights in the beginning of Oct. We really enjoyed our hotel and thanked Trip Advisor for helping us choose. The manager gave us special info on arrival telling us what was worth seeing on the island. Therefore we took a daytrip with guide the next day, this is highly recommended by us. - The only thing we missed in the hotel, was a cosy place to gather and have our usual ozo when we got home at night. The bar was too much like the breakfast room (in fact it was the breakfast room)

My partner and I stayed here for two nights in between stays on Mykonos and Santorini. We walked to the hotel from the ferry terminal (not a long walk, depending on the amount of luggage you're carrying). When we arrived, the attractive woman that checked us in immediately treated us to a tasty cordial of Kitron, a local liqueur, and showed us some of the island's highlights on a map. The room itself was nice, and quite sizeable by European standards. We even had a patio outside our room, where we enjoyed some beautiful Naxian sunsets. Breakfast was yummy, and the wi-fi access was great for confirming travel schedules, etc. The owner insisted on giving us a ride back down to the ferry terminal on our last day, despite the fact that he had just walked in the door at 8am. Going into it, we weren't sure what to expect of Naxos, but this hotel helped make it one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended.
