We just returned from Greece. We only visited one island among other places and that's Naxos. Though most people have been telling us that the islands are just for tourists, we decided not to listen to them. We just want to say "been there done that". And we were not disappointed.
When we were there, we stayed at the Hotel Grotta based on various reviews posted here and it's proximity to the bus station and port. It's really nice and the owner/manager was very hospitable. Everything that was stated before by previous visitors (in the posting), we've experienced. We arrived late at night as there was a strike at the Piraeus port and we had to board at Rafina later in the day. I e-mail the hotel and had my hotel in Athens called them to confirm the time we would arrive. Some one from the hotel (it was Dimitri) came and picked us up from the port, just the two of us. When we got to the hotel, we were offered the welcome drink of their local liquor, and information about what to do on the island including the hard to come by bus schedule. Dimitri never rushed us to our room though I was sure that he wanted to call it a day. We took his advice and visited a few villages the next day.
The room is very clean. They are simple but that's okay - it's not a luxury resort hotel. The hotel itself is very clean. For the price we pay, we were happy. The other staff (I think they were family members) are very friendly. Both Dimitri and Nikoletta speak English. I think Nikoletta also speaks French. The breakfast was fine. Remember, it's not a 5-star hotel in the city where you would find a mile long local breakfast food, and western ones. They offer fresh bread, yoguart, ham, cheese, hard boiled eggs etc. and that's fine with me.
From the hotel, we walked everywhere. The bus station is only 10 min slow walk away. There's a super market and a mini mart close by. You can walk to that "door frame" monument.
One thing though, if you want shampoo, and better soap, I suggest you bring your own.
Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay - clean, well fed in the morning, its location, thehospitality of the family who runs the hotel, and they accept credit card.
