The Astir of Naxos is a clean, quiet, and new hotel on the edge of town but within walking distance of Chora. We found the distance of 20-30 minutes walk to be a bonus. You may find the hotel lacks a bit in charm because of its newness. There is a grocery store very near by where you can buy wine and honey cheaper than in the tourist areas. The pool is beautiful and its hours of operation are somewhat limited as a courtesy to the guests who sleep late or go to bed early. I believe most rooms have a view of the pool as well as a balcony. There is also a fridge but it was so well hidden we didn’t find it until the last day. The breakfast is above average (all the hotels in Greece overcook the scrambled eggs, undercook the bacon, and the orange juice is really orange drink). Marusha (sp?) was a most helpful front desk person and recommended some great restaurants. Mr. Margaritas is also very friendly and seems genuinely interested in his guests.
TIPS – DO rent a car and drive all over this amazing island. In just a few minutes you’re out in the countryside with goat herding locals and ancient Byzantine churches sprinkled about. Buy a woven textile from the “weaver woman” in Halki and stop for coffee and ice cream in the mountain village of Filoti.
DO go horseback riding with the very serious, professional but still fun Iris Neubauer. Our boys (13 and 9) loved it as did we. We saw parts of the island you would otherwise miss.
DON’T bother eating at Nicko’s as suggested in the Frommer’s guidebook. The food was less than mediocre and the service was terrible. There are so many great restaurants in Naxos Town, why waste any time on this one!
