Levanto itself is a great base for seeing the cinque terre, at first we were disappointed we werent able to stay in one of the 5 towns due to our late booking however, the facilities of levanto are superior and its still a small town so you are still able to enjoy the charm of the region.
The hotel actually is a stones throw from the beach, and while many are published as such they neglect to mention getting there would involve traversing down a ravine. Hotel Nazionale is an easy, flat, 2minute stroll to the beach, and a 10 minute easy walk to the train station. It's also well signposted from the train station which was a luxury not encountered elsewhere in my travels.
The hotel is rustic, and staff were friendly. The rooms were small, but the bathrooms clean and modern with a small but well pressured shower. Our bed was not arranged as we had requested (split into singles) and the cleaners had left for the day we were given the linen to fix the arrangement ourselves. Our room had nice large windows for ventilation which was fortunate as the air-conditioning was largely ineffective. Breakfast served out in the garden was lovely and comprehensive.
I dont spend much time in the hotel when I travel with so many lovely bars, restaurants, beaches and hikes to visit but if you do or travel with small children you may wish to stay elsewhere as stir-craziness may result. If you are looking for a good central base and a clean place to rest your head, Hotel Nazionale could be for you.
