We are just home from a week in the Hotel Corfu - 2 adults and 2 children (aged 4 and 6). We booked the hotel on the basis of the Trip Advisor reviews for both it and its sister hotel the Marina Skorpios but we were very disappointed. We had requested the Skorpios but were allocated the Corfu.
On the plus side the location is superb. The cove and the beach are gorgeous and the views are magnificent. Cala Egos is small but lovely for a stroll. We have stayed in Cala d'Or before and love the town and the marina.
The one good thing about the hotel was the Animation Team, especially Jan, Alex and Susanna. They were superb - good fun, entertaining, energetic but not intrusive. The kids disco and bingo were all good fun, and the shows were entertaining.
The staff (bar staff, pool lifeguards, cleaners) were friendly and the hotel was spotlessly clean.
They were the good points...... now for the not so good...!
We had emailed the hotel requesting a sea view room, however on arrival very late (1.30am) early Saturday morning were allocated a room on the 6th floor, overlooking the back of the hotel opposite - their air-conditioning vents, rubbish bins and delivery entrance. We asked to move but were told to ask at reception the next morning which we did. We were told it wasn't possible to move that day but to come back again on Monday at which point we were promised a room overlooking the sea/pool.
We spent the next 3 nights in this room - it was very noisy as it was above the entrance of our hotel with coaches arriving/departing during the night with holiday makers arriving/leaving, delivery trucks arriving at the hotel across the road, bins/bottles being dumped in the garbage bins across the road etc. Not to mention being able to hear our neighbours in the room next door in the throes of passion each night!! I am also amazed at how inconsiderate some people are - dragging wooden furniture around a tiled floor at 5am beggars belief, not to mention allowing your children run up and down the corridors screeching and laughing whilst dragging wheely suitcases with them at 1.30am - incredible!!
Anyway, we duly turned up at reception at 9am on the Monday morning - yes we were on the list for moving but our new room wasn't yet ready. We were told to come back at 12.30pm. We came back to reception at the appointed time to be told that our new room had been given to someone else and we couldn't move!!?? The receptionist was extremely arrogant and didn't care in the slightest that we had been waiting all morning to move, had turned up when we were asked to and that giving our room to someone else was extremely unfair. My husband was very restrained and polite but the receptionist just kept on shouting over him and not letting him talk. Eventually my husband asked to speak to the Manager who equally was unconcerned that we had been promised a move, had been waiting 3 days to move and yet our room was given to someone who had just arrived, whilst we were sitting out by the pool, packed and ready to go. We were told to come back (again!!) tomorrow and we would be moved.
We were moved the next day to a room with a lovely view - but it in no way made up for how we had been treated the previous day.
The rooms themselves are all the same. We had two single beds pushed together, with the children on a camp-bed and a sofa bed. The rooms/furniture are very dated. The pillows are dreadfully uncomfortable and the walls between the rooms are very thin. The bathrooms have been updated and are nice but the hand basin/vanity unit is extraordinarily high.
We felt the food and the dining room let the hotel down also. We stuck with breads/salads/fruit/cheese as the hot dishes were not appealing. Everything was either sloppy or greasy. The dining room itself was more like a canteen - very old and dated and not somewhere that you would linger over a glass of wine and relax.
We were determined not to get involved in the "sun bed dance" every morning but the reality was that our children wanted to play in the pool every day and we had to be sitting beside them to supervise them. We ended up putting towels on chairs, commandeering umbrellas and then waiting for the sunbeds to be unlocked at 9am so we could secure our position. Madness - but if you can't beat 'em... join 'em!! We preferred the smaller, quieter Corfu pool and apart from one day on the beach, we stayed there.
Overall we were disappointed with the hotel in general, the attitude of the Manager and receptionist (who shall remain nameless in my review!), the food, the rooms and the dining area. We would not recommend it and we will not return.
