Close to a rocky shore and a few steps from the harbour with its ferry terminal, marina and fishing boats. A short walk to the Old Town's two small beaches, sea-front restaurants, Main Street shops and a huge choice of restaurants and bars. This is the perfect location for those who like to get out, feel the local flavour and discover what the town has to offer. If all you want to do is lay by the pool in the day and huddle in the hotel bar with fellow Brits at night - go somewhere else.
The Dunas Club, built in the 1980s forms a rectangle with the pool and sun terrace in the middle. There is a squash court, a fairly basic gym and a laundry. Apartments have balconies overlooking either the pool, one of two roads or the sea. Some get more sun than others, some get more traffic noise than others, some have a sea view and some don't. If yours doesn't suit you the friendly reception staff seemed very happy to try to juggle people around.
Our apartment (213) faced outwards on the less sunny but quieter side with a (round the corner) sea view. It had virtually new, very comfortable beds, was freshly painted ,spotlessly clean and was very adequately equipped unless you planned to cook a five course banquet. There was full maid service daily except Thursdays & Sundays with regular changes of towels and bed linen. Five star it wasn't but it was value for money and did exactly what it said on the tin.
This good value extended to the pool bar/cafe with its range of lunchtime meals and snacks at very reasonable prices, to the La Luna Bar/Pub (British sport on big screen TV) and the adjoining La Luna Restaurant where the menu offers both quality and quantity - try the mixed grill if your'e brave enough!
Other establishments well worth a visit or three are Meson Tio Bernabe (Calle de La Iglesia) -local dishes and some surprises.La Marquesina (overlooking town beach) - Great for fish dishes. Hong Kong International (Main Street Atlantico Centre) - Extensive and good standard all you can eat buffet for less than 8 Euros.
Ones to possibly avoid include Gibsons - Food OK but portions disappointing and no warning (except in small print in the menu) that they don't take plastic. Windy Millers - Yes they're British and yes they have pork pies but their prices are well OTT - much better value over the road at the Dunas Club and miss El Torro Brava (Main Street) - Their main aim seems to be to rush through as many punters as possible.
If you're into live music there's plenty around. At Castaways (overlooking harbour) the landlord does a Neil Diamond tribute show but the best nights are probably Thursdays featuring Wendy Walker (who has a fine pair of lungs) and Mondays when he is joined by local singer/guitarist Alberto. Try Rosie O'Grady's (Calle Pizarro) on Tuesday when Ronnie and Sue perform some good stuff. The rest of the week it is Big Phil who knows a thousand songs and has the backing tapes to make them all sound exactly the same. Paddy's Bar (Atlantico Centre) is well worth a visit with Saturday's Elvis Special not to be missed if you don't take The King too seriously. Also in the Atlantico Centre is The Venue where the landlord does an Eagles tribute night on Mondays and Fridays.
Overall - excellent value for budget prices but one word of warning - If you have kids look elsewhere as there are no activities for them with the Dunas Club.
