We visited Las Marismas during Carnival week, Feb. 3-10 and had a nice time, but would try another resort if we were to return to the Canary Islands in the future. Our main reasons for selecting this resort was due to the amenities it advertised: heated pools, kids club, miniature golf onsite, all inclusive option, apartment-like rooms, and a water park across the street. The weather was in the low to mid 70's (F) during the day and 60's at night.
There's alot to review so I'll try to make it more manageable by topic...
Pools:
- 2 immaculately clean and nice sized large pools with plenty of lounge chairs and table sets around. Bar/buffet area and bathrooms poolside.
- 1 kiddie pool, also very clean and located between a large pool and the miniature golf course. Kids club entrance (with small playground in sand) is right there too.
- Pools were advertised as heated, but were not. The water was ice cube, freezing cold and hardly any guests braved the water the week we were there. This was a disappointment because this was a big draw since the kids would be occupied for hours on end in a reasonably temperate water temperatures. (During warmer months this wouldn't be an issue, but it's Feb.)
Kids club:
Entrance to kids club at kids pool. Down ramp to bottom which is well enclosed so no escapees!! :) Outdoor area with sand and playset and teeter totter. Indoor room with glass walls looking over playground. Some Kids books but all in German. Some duplo blocks, areas to paint and draw. Clay available.
The person working kids club was a guy with shoulder length hair and he seemed nice. He said hello when we came in but kept to himself. Our kids are more used to the high school girl type of sitter, so they didn't feel comfortable staying with him. He disappeared for awhile when we first visited it and another couple was hoping to leave their son with him to get an hour alone but no one knew where he went.
Main Building/Reception Area:
- I'd recommend at check-in that you:
1) get pool towels so you don't have to make an additional trip later. It's a 10 Euro deposit per towel which you get back when you return the towels WITH the deposit slip (don't lose it!!). You can exchange your yellow towels for clean ones whenever you like during your stay.
2) Get a code for your room safe, which can only be done at the front desk. It's 12,60 Euro for the week which was reasonable. I read another review on this site that said they were broken into their first day, so it was worth it for that piece of mind. We had no safety issues during our stay.
Laundry:
Laundry Facilities onsite. You get special coins and detergent at the front desk. One wash, one dry, one bag of detergent was 6,50 which seemed reasonable to me. Tip: Put dryer on highest setting or your clothes will come out very damp!
Room location/reco:
- Thanks to other reviewers here mentioning bug problems on the ground floor, was asked our travel agent to reserve a quiet and upper floor room. Ours was a 2 room apartment (#1313) with bath and balcony. Nice, clean, and no bugs! The bathroom was very large and the room was in a quiet location.
- I'd recommend NOT getting room 1310 and 1311 because there are 3 steps down to the back section of rooms here with a metal ramp alongside (for suitcase toting). The metal ramp right outside the door and bathroom of these rooms is very loud, so if you're a light sleeper or don't want to hear the metal racket, pounding I'd recommend staying away from those 2. Our room was past these, down a very short breezeway with the laundry room and around the corner. Our balcony faced the metal ramp but was far enough away that it wasn't bothersome.
TV:
They have limited selection of stations which include CNN and Skynews (both in english), however those stations in particular were out for most of our stay.
I realize you don't go on vacation to sit inside and watch TV, but it was the Super Tuesday primaries and we were hoping to find out what was happening back home.
On Sunday we had all the stations. We lost the cable signal for a while on Sunday night and when the stations came back on CNN and Sky News were missing. I called the front desk the next night in the hopes of getting CNN back before Super Tuesday. To their credit they promptly sent a maintenance guy over to check it out, but he said it was the cable company issue not an issue w/ the TV (which I agree with) so they'd contact the cable company. The next day CNN and SkyNews were back on.
We had another cable outage mid-week and lost the english channels again. They didn't come back.
Cleaning:
The card in the room says the apartments are cleaned 2x/week and the towels are changed 3x/week.... or maybe I have the frequency reverses? It was 2 times for one and 3 times for the other, I forget.
The room smelled very clean when we arrived and after each of the cleaning lady's visits.
The kitchen area in the apartment was very clean. It had a sink, cabinet sized fridge, and small counter top stove. There was a modest set of dishes and a couple pots, spoons, etc. They don't clean any of them though and no dish liquid or sponges are provided. Who knows if or how well the previous guests cleaned them though, so I washed what we wanted to use ahead of time.
Food:
We chose the all inclusive option. Wore wristbands for the duration of the stay. It includes a buffet breakfsast, lunch, and dinner. When they're not serving the poolside bar has food and drinks. Some food and drinks are free (draft beer, sangria, chocolate milk, soda, etc) for all inclusive guests, other food/drink is charged but at a reduced rate.
If you're all inclusive at the Poolside Bar you are supposed to order food from your table but go to the bar to order/get your drinks.
The Bar staff courteous and speaks english.
There are individual packaged ice cream treats for sale there that were good (and inexpensive).
I saw some warnings on Trip Advisor about the quality and selection of buffet food so I didn't have my expectations too high and this was good, so thanks for the heads up!!
For breakfast you could get sunny side up eggs or a ham and/or cheese omelet. There were also hard boiled eggs, potatoes of some sort (not salted), meat (like irish rashers, for example) baked beans, fruit, a couple cereals, bread, cold cuts.
I don't remember the lunch food. Same variety as other meals.
Dinner included house wine, draft beer, milk, soda, coffee, hot chocolate, etc. There were other wines available you could pay for. There was a meat, fish, & pasta dish. Sides were veggies, french fries, rice. (Often rice on left hand buffet, fries on right... check both sides and you might find some different side dishes).
The food was pretty basic, nothing to write home about. I asked what my husband thought of the food and got a shrug and "OK". That was my impression too. The kids will eat pasta if nothing else, but they didn't even like the pasta there, even plain. Go figure! And they really didn't like the sauces (example - pasta sauce was tomato-y and tasted like tomato soup).
Dessert: jello, a couple pies, lots of different kinds of mousse. We tended to eat later and a number of the things were gone or almost gone. Our last night we ate when they opened at 6:30 though and even then the chocolate mousse was gone already.
So overall the variety was good but the flavor wasn't great. If you know that going in and don't mind it, it's okay.
Groceries/Shops:
- There's a small grocery store onsite that carries a nice variety of products (even diapers, sand buckets, and sun lotion). The prices were reasonable compared to other western european places we've been.
- There are alot of shops, grocery stores, and even a pharmacy within walking distance.
- There's a great souvenir shop close to the hotel with wonderful selection and very low prices. Directions: Walking out the lobby, turn right. At end of the street turn Left and it's one block up on the corner, you can't miss it.
- Since it was cold we wanted sweatshirts. I found good quality ones around the corner from that store. Dir: From the store, go around the corner to the right and down a couple of blocks (TONS of shops here). Pass Pizza and Guinness signs on your left and the shop is down on your left. Sorry but I can't remember the name! The shopkeeper is a german woman, very nice, and multi lingual.
Airport location/shuttle:
- Easy to find hotel shuttles at airport (out to your right).
- Comfortable, modern, air conditioned buses.
- Bus ride was about 40 minutes to hotel because we had to drop others off along the way. Directly would have been more like 25 mins I think.
- Return shuttle to airport: Punctual, comfortable as before.
Day trips:
1) Beach. The resort is not on a beach but you can pay 2 euro per person for round trip shuttle. Leaves around 11:15 am and comes back to get you around 3:30. Drops you off at Maria's Restaurant and Grocery store. Walk about a block to the beach. Bathrooms on Beach, umbrellas and lounge chairs already setup for you to rent. Sand was wonderfully soft and clean. Water was rough - red flags up - and lifeguards flagging people in, so nothing to say about water. Besides it was too cold for that anyway! Hot dog stand nearby.
2) Went to Oasis Zoo on southern part of island for the day. Walked 2 blocks from hotel to pick up bus at 7:55am. Arrive at Oasis Park at 9am. (A number of stops at hotels in between.) Price included bus ride, buffet lunch, planned schedule for the day with 4 animal shows and a camel ride (but with breaks built in). Again a comfortable air conditioned bus w/ CD playing. Tour guide Kate was very helpful and pleasant throughout the day.
The camel ride was highlight. They took pictures and also filmed you with a camcorder. This gets incorporated into a DVD that you can purchase for 15 euro. We bought it but haven't watched it yet.
We saw a parrot show, reptile show, seal show and birds of prey show. The reptile show was hilarious. The Australian guy who does it is so funny and gets the audience laughing throughout.
The grounds are nicely landscaped. There are a number of animals but I got the feeling there's more landscaping than animals here. Not the best zoo I've been to, but a nice way to spend the day with the kids.
We returned around 7pm that night. Long day!
Summary:
So... in conclusion it was a pleasant stay but because it wasn't what we were expecting we'd go somewhere else if we were to return to the island. Reasons - the pool wasn't heated which was a big minus this time of year, the water park across the street wasn't open but was advertising that it was, the food was ho-hum, our kids weren't interested in the kids club and as a result were bored.
