Sheena and Ian made the perfect hosts for a 2 night stay at Greystones where I stayed with my mother just before Christmas. I wanted accommodation with character and this B&B has it by the bucketload...especially the wonky floors! (although if you prefer modern then a new room with spa-bath and plasma screen is now also available). We stayed in the Greystones and Fleur-de-Lys suites, both situated in the main (400yr old) building - but Ian was also proud to show me the Hayloft on request with its gorgeous 4 poster bed and heart-shaped bath for two. I hope to be back with my partner in the summer...the location is a little remote...but lincoln and newark are only 20mins drive away. And for a romantic/relaxing/special getaway its very hard to beat!

  • Liked — character of old building, friendly hosts, great breakfasts
  • Disliked — lack of pressure in shower

Booked this B&B after reading a couple of reviews on this site after looking for a nice place to stay near Newark for a family get together. Was a little further from Newark than I thought and with a return journey to the town centre costing £35 I'm sure to many there are places in the centre better suited.

For me and my partner the extra cost was well worth it, when we arrived we received a warm welcome, the lady who greeted us informed us on the local taxi firms and then showed us to our room. This was a much more personal service and with myself being more accustomed to a faceless or should I say a more corporate infused smile and a well rehearsed welcome from the larger hotels chains I normally stay in me and my partner felt at ease within the first few minute.

The room was beautiful, a nice size and a very comfortable bed. The room was very clean and well presented and it had everything we needed. The only bad point, and I use them words very loosely is the shower was a bit of a let down. No pressure and a shower head with a mind of it's own, this was the only thing that I can think of that wasn't top notch.

We were expecting to to come back late so the lady of the house gave us a key and we went on our way. In the morning we had arranged the evening before for breakfast to be served at 9am, we were greeted in the dining room where we had a great choice of tradition English breakfast, fresh fruit, cereal or really anything you fancied.

Overall we loved our stay and I'm looking into booking a room for my mother to have a weekend break. Both me and my partner would differently go again.

My girlfriend and I booked a long weekend over Easter and have come back utterly refreshed. I was lucky enough to stay in the Fleur-De-Lys suite and the Hayloft, and can easily say that it is the best accommodation I have ever had the pleasure to reside in. I honestly cannot fault any particular aspect of the Greystones Guest House, and cannot wait to go back. The breakfasts are by far the best I have ever had in ANY B & B, they really are huge! The cleanliness of the rooms is immaculate… the owners are meticulous about this. What made our retreat first class though were the owners who run the B & B – brilliant, brilliant people. What impressed me most is how they balanced a 400 year old farmhouse with modern applications – the décor is spot on. The Hayloft comprises of a four poster bed with Egyptian cotton sheets and goose down duvet, a heart-shaped bathtub which can easily hold two (!), and under floor heating. There really is no need to venture outside if you're based here!
If you're looking for a place to get away from the daily rat race, this is the spot; I guarantee you will not be disappointed. There is enough to do if you wish to venture out – Lincoln & Newark are twenty minutes drive away, and the legendary Sherwood Forest is less than an hour away. The local villages of Winthorpe, Besthorpe and Swinderby are delightful picture-postcard villages, and the pubs are pretty good, too! For eating out, The Lord Nelson (Winthorpe), King's Head (Collingham) and the Grey Horse are highly recommended. If you wish for a sublime curry, the Mint Leaf is 5 minutes drive away.
This accommodation has not got a Silver Service award for nothing; you will also find yourselves quite enamoured with your hosts at the Greystones.
I've travelled all over the world, stopped in hostels all the way up to 5 Star hotels, seen the best and experienced the worst… Greystones more or less tops the lot. The rooms are ridiculously cheap, and I guarantee that you will leave the place very impressed indeed. Book up now!

A brilliant little B and B. I was just in the area for work but found it a pleasure staying in such a wonderful homely and characterful place. For half the price you would pay for an average hotel I had a room worthy of 5 stars. The breakfast was magnificent and kept me going all day. This is the standard all accomodation in should stick to - puts travelodges to shame!!
