We (2 adults, a 3yr old and baby) went to Tryp May 26 - June 2 from Edmonton.
From reading the other reviews, we expected an amazing experience all around, but we were disappointed.
First Impression - nice resort and really glad we upgraded to the VIP from the start, instead of lining up with the other 150 people from our plane that were at this resort we walked into guest services and were handed our key. We were heading for dinner while others on our bus were still waiting to check-in. We knew before we arrived we were supposed to be in Room 541, but it was changed to 544 (the only renovated 2nd floor room at Tryp).
We did not recieve our Welcome Cocktrails upon arrival as we were supposed to, which was annoying but not a big deal, as we had a fully stocked mini-bar, although it never had the fruit juice it was supposed to, and 3 times we had to keep calling to have it refilled. We also only had instant coffee to use with our coffee maker. This was never fixed.
Our bags were quickly taken to our room, as a VIP your bags are given priority.
The room was acceptable, we did have some small bugs, but learned to put the bar of soap over the sink drain and this stopped them from coming back.\
Our room was ok, even though it is renovated you could still see it's age. The view was great, as all are in building 5.
I have nothing really good to say about the staff, other than Roy, our buildings gardener was a great guy and very friendly. He even made a bracelt for my wife and did not want anything in return.
Viola the buffet host, is a complete BLEEP and made up rules to get in as she wanted.
I hear people say the management is everywhere, after having a major issue with a few staff members, the management refused to meet with me.
Buffet - Above average for Cuban resorts, nothing amazing but always something to eat. Wait staff have there favorite guests, and will ignore those they do not know. We even had to find out waiter and ask for cutlery.
Oriental - Do not eat here, tiny servings and poor quality.
International - Great, lobster was good. Taught the Waitress what a Wine Spritzer was.
Italian - ok, the Gnochhi is actually mashed potatoes
Pizza Restraunt - great pizza
Beach Grill - Ok, nothing amazing but a good lunch
Seafood Restraunt - the best restraunt at Tryp we had an beachfront table
We skipped our reservations at the Cuban and BBQ Grill due to weather.
- Great beach, quite narrow but nice sand.
Overall, we would not recommend this resort mainly based on the very very poor service levels. If you want a decent beach, and don't care about decent service you might like Tryp. Our next trip will be back to Varadero.
Room 544 is the only renovated 2nd floor room at Tryp, but reserved for VIP Guests. Email in advance...

We are really surprise with your comments. Actually the majority of our guests are very satisfied with the service and the most important reason to keep them coming back is the Hotel staff. It is true that we are all over the resort checking the Hotel operation and it would have been a pleasure to meet you and discuss personally about your dissatisfaction. Of course, as in every other places, the Hotel restaurants have rules regarding dress code and it has to be respected because it means respect to the rest of our guests as well. Sorry if you were not able to understand it. It will be a pleasure for me to meet you anytime if you decide to comeback.
