save yourself a MISERABLE DAY if you take the ferry- this will truly ruin a whole day of your vacation. We spent 9 hours in transport in one day getting to and from Culebra by taking this ferry, and we even used Kayaking Puerto Rico. We had to get up at 6am in Palmas Del Mar to be at the Ferry on time, snorkeled for 3 hours, and then got home at like 8pm hungry and exhausted. There was no parking to start off with. Then the ferry gets a random inspection from the Coast Guard so its running 2 hours behind schedule. So our whole family is just standing in this dirty hot crowded sidewalk waiting , waiting, waiting, no idea when they will finally let us on. We ended up standing there and waiting for almost 3 hours. There was some exremely dirty bathrooms and a vending coke machine at least. But the real horror started on the ferry. It was dirty, crowded, choppy, and the people were also dirty, loud, smelly, rude, etc etc. There were barking dogs, screaming children, teens being rowdy and loud, etc etc. We only go to be there for like 3 hours adn then we had to catch it back.
The worst was on the way back, no one would scoot together to make room for my family of 7. We finally started just asking if they would move so at least one or two of us could sit scattered throughout the ferry, and they would lie and say "No I'm saving these seats for my family." This is as we are pulling away from ferry dock. so clearly no one else from thier party is coming. Finally the ferry captain saw this was going on and he came up and made people scoot together ( there were other families, not just ours that couldn't find seats). of course after that, we didn't want to sit by them either if they thought we looked worth lying about so they wouldn't have to sit by Americans. Finally we just sat on the floor like heathen. Its a long 2.5 hour ferry ride sitting on the floor after snorkeling and no access to a hose to rinse off sand or change out of your suit. I'm just mortified about the whole experience, esp since my 53 yr old dad with a really bad back had to sit on the floor. After all this we found out there was a private catamaran or boat we could have chartered out of Palmas Del Mar (where we were staying). We are just kicking ourselves for not doing that. Part of booking with this company is that the guides are supposed to arrive early enough to hold a place in line for the tour group so we can find seats, and the guide obviously didn't do that for our trip back.
It wasn't Kayaking Puerto Rico's fault about the delay and the random drug inspection so thats why i gave this trip a 3 instead of a 1 (the ferry ride itself gets a negative 5), and i must thank them for refunding us 25% of the trip b/c of the delay. The snorkeling was pretty good. It was not a great and healthy and full of sea life as the reef in Belize or Hawaii, but comparable to snorkeling in Key West. If we go back we would take the chartered private boat; i wish Kayaking Puerto Rico would offer that as an option for an additional $100 a person - we would have GLADLY paid to have a relaxing day of boating and snorkeling and to have had fun drinks on the boat ride over.
