The hotel's own brochure rates itself as 4.5 stars, but 4 is definitely the maximum possible, and a generous rating at that. I stayed a week on a business trip, so didn't want or need to use any of the leisure facilities. But, as a relatively frequent visitor to Perth, this hotel would be low on my list of places to stay for a holiday. I only stayed here because it was relatively handy to my place of work for the week, and because it had been a long time since I last visited (1995), so I was curious.
Nevertheless, the ability to take oneself for an early morning walk along the beach every day proved to be a welcome bonus, so I was pleased with my choice, and would return for that alone.
As it happened, I was accorded a couple of notable favours. Since I require broadband internet access from my hotel room, I called the day before my arrival to double-check the situation. (The website I had booked with simply noted "internet access" was available, but when I checked on the hotel's own website it became clear that this could mean dial-up! (And in this day and age in an up-market hotel!!)). I called the hotel, and discovered my reservation, admittedly at a discounted rate, had me in a "standard" room, which was dial-up only. I expressed my disappointment, said I wouldn't have booked if that had been made clear, and was promptly upgraded to a superior room that had broadband, and for no additional cost. Given the cost of broadband access, however, that was not altogether surprising.
Still, I confess I did enjoy my upgraded room (1814), especially after comparing notes with my colleague, who was given the sort of room I guess I might have been given otherwise. He described his room as "tired" and with no outlook, while mine was clearly recently refurbished, pleasantly so, and with knock-out beach and coastal views. Speaking of internet rates, A$25/day is highway robbery, but I have always found that a polite request to the front desk (especially if one is staying a full week, as I was) results in a discount being applied, as was the case for me. So: no complaints from me re the front desk staff!
The only minor grumble was that the room featured one of my pet hates: the only way to plug in my laptop involved crawling on hands and knees under the desk, and I had to unplug the desk lamp since the other power-point was occupied with the plug for the in-room router, which, strangely, was dangling under the desk, hanging only by its network and power cables. Most bizarre. (But quite tidy compared to what I saw in my hotel room the previous week in a Holiday Inn in Orlando: see the photo in that review for a true under-desk horror.)
Breakfast was decent: $20/person for continental all-you-can-eat is pretty fair, and the selection was abundant and diverse. The in-house "Dome" chain coffee shop, part of the same building complex, also does a pretty good breakfast for a slightly cheaper alternative.
The only other strangeness was the towel count in the bathroom. On various days I was allocated either 2, or 3, or 4 towels. Guessing how many towels I'd find each evening on my return became one of the distractions of an otherwise routine week.
