We could not have been happier with the Hopkins Ordinary. First, the decor was very nice - there were no elements of cheesy kitsch (not a teddy bear or doll to be found). Kevin and Sherry, the proprietors, did an excellent job restoring an old country inn tastefully, maintaining the original heart pine floors, uncovering hidden fireplaces and furnishing the rooms very simply, elegantly and comfortably.
Second, the food was fantastic. They serve coffee roasted locally (go
visit Central Coffee Roasters, which is a 5-minute ride from Hopkins
- great coffee and the coffee roaster herself is very friendly). The first morning we had sweet potato pancakes with bacon, the second we had two kinds of fritatta with homemade scones, and the third we had French toast in a bourbon batter with locally made sausage. And before the main course, they serve fruit - we had two mornings of beautifully arranged plates of fresh fruit and one morning with broiled grapefruit (surprisingly tasty). At night, they leave a plate
of homemade cookies out for you, along with some port.
But what really sets the Hopkins Ordinary apart are Kevin and Sherry.
They are extremely generous and helpful hosts, without being overbearing in the least. Foodies can trust their restaurant recommendations (we enjoyed Foti's and 4 and 20 Blackbirds) and winos can trust their vineyard recommendations (our favorite was Linden - go hungry so you can sit on the deck after the tasting with a glass of wine and a plate of local cheese and venison sausage). They know the local trails in Shenandoah Park inside out and backwards and can point you in the direction of whatever you're up for - they even lent us their Appalachian Trail maps (and gave us other smaller maps). But they really go above and beyond the call of B&B duty - we didn't bring any rain gear, so they let us borrow their raincoats for a hike on a misty day. And on Sunday night, when the dining options in the area are a little limited, they put together a phenomenal cheese plate for us (including ricotta that Kevin made), which we ate on the upstairs porch with a bottle of wine we bought at Rappahanock Cellars and salads from a little restaurant down the street - the perfect end to a long day of hiking.
And then they brought us some beautifully cooked local trout. And then they brought us some delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. It was fantastic! We truly enjoyed staying there and would happily go back again.
