What a relaxing place and a great way to slow down from our busy lives. We stayed in the Goshen Room in the loghouse and loved it. No phones, no tv. Comfy bed; AC was windows wide open - we slept great.
Jeff and Becky would ask at breakfast if anyone needed any assistance making plans for the day. My husband used to backpack this area so he had his agenda.
Be sure to read about the history of the Inn and Jeff and Becky's family in the book in your room. The driveway is a challenge - but its doable, you just take it slow. (some just aren't accustomed to mountain driving)

The hearty breakfasts were a great start to the day and held you past lunch. The baked oatmeal is very good. (we did not partake on the dinners)
We would sit on the porch and rock at the end of the day and with our first cup of coffee in the morning watching the busy hummingbirds and the clouds constantly changing over the mountain ranges.

We used the hot tub which we needed after a few strenuous hikes.

When we need to get away and slow down the Sugar Tree Inn will call our name.

We enjoyed our stay here many years ago, and fortunately knew to take a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get down the treacherous unpaved switchback road down a sheer mountainside. Once we got there, we were delighted to find only improvements to the inn we fell in love with years ago. Jeff and Becky are marvelous - hospitable but not in any way intrusive. Jeff's cooking is excellent. He takes pains to find the best ingredients and knows how to prepare them perfectly. We were pleasantly surprised by the dessert wine from a local winery. (Virginia wines don't impress us usually, but this one was delicious!) Becky's oatmeal is also terrific. I plan to ask Gourmet Mag to get their recipe. Unlike most B&B's each party sits at a different table, but there is easy camaraderie if you want it. The dining room is especially beautiful. It is glassed in and you can enjoy watching wildlife. Deer, chipmunks and many birds turned up to entertain us. We would go more often if they could serve dinner later. It took us 4 hours to get there from the Washington area on a holiday weekend.

Management response from Jeff Chanter, Owner
(Management representative)
19 Apr 2009
While our driveway is one lane with several curves and is a bit steep in places, it is in no way treacherous. It is completely paved except for a 100 yard stretch which is flat, and four wheel drive is never required, even in winter.
We, of course, appreciate the complimentary tone of the rest of this review but I do want to assure everyone that our driveway is safe.... not one of our thousands of guests has ever had an accident on it.
Also, "Normal" travel time from D.C. is usually about three hours
Hope to see you soon!

My husband and I just got back from staying 3 nights at the "Sugar Tree Inn"...We are
hooked for life! This is, without a doubt, the best place we have ever stayed! It is such
a perfect getaway; quiet, beautiful, secluded...Our room, "The Sugar Tree" is hands-down the most perfect room we have ever had. Everything is made from 125 yr. old wood and stone. We had a wood-fire every night, and so enjoyed the hot tub right next
to the windows in the bedroom, with an unsurpassed 40 mile view! And, the king-size bed is so soft and comfortable! The hosts, Becky and Jeff do everything to make your stay perfect. They served us a "4-Star" breakfast every morning. We saw 6 deer come to eat by the dining room windows morning and night.
This has now become our number one choice for when we need to get away and connect not only with one another, but with nature and God! Tina and David Blackwell, Columbia, SC

My husband heard of Sugar Tree Inn from a coworker who recommended it. We were in desperate need of a weekend getaway after a tough year and this was perfect. We only live about 1 hour and a half away, so we weren't in the car too terribly long, but once we were there, we felt like we were worlds away from the stresses of everyday life.

The accommodations were excellent, the food delicious and the innkeepers friendly and helpful. We will definitely go back in warmer months to enjoy the outdoors.

We came home relaxed, refreshed and reconnected. I highly recommend the Sugar Tree Inn!

The Sugar Tree was a wonderful place for us to get away and relax for the weekend. Our great weekend started as soon as we pulled up. We were greeted by Becky when we arrived. She gave us a wonderful tour and then showed us to our room. Our room was very cozy, welcoming, and very relaxing. We were able to just relax and enjoy the the quietness of the mountains. The views from the front porch were amazing and breath taking. The most amazing part was the sunsets each night. To top off the amazing weekend was the delicious food. The 3 course dinners were extremely high quality and some of the best food we have had in awhile. The breakfast in the morning was so filling we did not even have to eat lunch that day. I would go every weekend if we had the time. We will be be back very soon. Thank you Jeff and Becky for your warm hospitality and all you did to make our weekend great!

  • Liked — The food and the peacefulness.
  • Disliked — The shortness of our stay
