My wife and I traveled to the Virginia Beach area recently with the thought of seeing a number of historical sights. With so many in the area we were not disappointed in that regard. I wish we could say the same about the hotel where we stayed.
We paid extra for an upgraded room which was to have an "ocean view " and a refrigerator with a microwave. We were warned at the time of our booking we may be placed in a room with two double beds instead of the requested king. We also were directed to request the king bed upon arrival. When we checked in and were not told up front if the room would be double beds I asked before proceeding upstairs to our room .The front desk staff appeared disinterested in assisting with possible changes to our rooming options and made virtually no effort to try and locate a different room. Without looking on the computer monitor in front of her, our hostess assured us there was no other rooms available. However, both of the rooms across from ours and one next to ours appears to have been unoccupied that night as evidenced by the absence of a courtesy newspaper outside those doors the next day. There in fact appeared to be a number of other rooms available judging by the empty spaces in the parking lot and the near empty lobby.
As for the room we were assigned, our room was anything but an ocean view. The hotel is oriented in an east/ west line. The major number of rooms thus are on either the north face or the south face. Only the east face actually was oriented towards the ocean. Our room was on the north side and was about half way down the hall. The only way our room qualified as being an ocean view is that we could look out our window to our right (eastward) and see the ocean further down the beach.
The entire decor of the room was dated. Further, there were a number of stained ceiling tiles, and mold in the tub area. The in-the-wall air conditioner worked only if turned on the coldest possible setting (60 degrees). Even then the air temperature never got below 73 in the room. The hallway outside our door had numerous patched areas on the walls where the unpainted sheetrock still shown. To make matters worse, at neither the time of booking our reservation nor at the time of check in were we ever told about the renovation and repairs taking place on the entire 9th floor of the hotel and elsewhere on the premises.
We chose to take an afternoon off from sightseeing one day and went to spend an afternoon at the pool. We made it about 30 minutes at the totally unshaded pool (no umbrellas, no trees, no nothing) before we gave up and left to go elsewhere. During our short stay at the pool I also noticed numerous missing tiles on the walls of the pool evidencing significant disrepair.
About the most positive thing I can say about this hotel is that the breakfast buffet was decent and fairly priced. This hotel counts upon the fact that people book and prepay on line without knowing the condition of its rooms and premises. Once you get there, you will not find very many other hotels with vacancies and so you are stuck at this one. Hopefully your stay will not be long.
