My husband and I recently stayed for the second time at the Middleton Inn in Washington, Virginia. This bed and breakfast is in an impeccably decorated mansion. The hospitality at this bed and breakfast is outstanding. There is turn down service, and bottles of water were left out for us. We enjoyed the chess game and reading materials in the living room; sherry was on the sideboard had we wanted it. The proprietor was so concerned that we needed to leave very early in the morning this trip and would miss breakfast that she packed a bag of goodies for us -- juice, fruit, muffins, etc. and left it out for us to take with us when we slipped out at 6 a.m. If you are going to dine at The Inn at Little Washington, this is an excellent choice of accommodations.

The Middleton Inn is one of the best bed and breakfasts I've ever been to. Not only were the accommodations extremely comfortable (superior mattresses provided an excellent night's sleep), but the food was great. As I soaked in my morning bath, the scent of muffins baking wafted through the air reminding me how hungry I was. And the owner of the Inn took a step way beyond the call of duty when she called the restaurant where we had reservations (the Inn at Little Washington) to let them know it was my birthday so they could surprise me with a customized menu saying "Happy Birthday, Mary". Needless to say, I plan to return to this fabulous Inn in Washington, Virginia.

The Middleton Inn is a glorious retreat in one of the most beautiful parts of the Va. countryside.The rooms and baths are extremely comfortable, the staff is delightful and the ambience is one of peace and quiet and understated charm. The view of the mountains and buccolic surroundings over wine and cheese from the front porch allows guests to mix and mingle before heading out to dinner. A lavish English breakfast in the formal period dining room is a step back in time . A lovely experience. One I want to repeat as soon as possible.

My wife and I always enjoy the variety offered by Bed and Breakfast style accomodations for overnight stays. Henceforth, our grading scale will have The Middleton Inn in Washington, VA (that's "Little Washington", 1 hour plus West of "big" Washington DC) as our standard to beat. This lovely Inn is not cheap, (what really classy thing is?) but from the linens you sleep on to the sterling silver you eat with, the proprietor, Mary Ann Kuhn has spared no details in renovating this wonderful place. The floors may creak when you walk on them and the occasional early morning Canada goose flight outside your window may be distracting, but isn't that what it's all about? Mary Ann has brought to her home (she lives there too) an exquisite balance between old and new.
When you go, make sure to visit the dining room and visit with the sculpture on the piano deck. See if you can identify the subject before they tell you. A Ritz Carlton this is not, but it reflects the same attention to detail, from the filled ice buckets in your room to the Port nightcap in the living rooom/lounge. And by all means, do not miss breakfast! It is knock-your-socks-off good!!
