We stayed here about a year ago before this hotel was a Hilton Doubletree. It needed a lot of improvements, but we thought there was so much potential. It had a gorgeous lobby, restaurant, and pool and great staff. The rooms didn't smell good, and the beds were uncomfortable before Hilton took over. It also needed a deep cleaning before Hilton took over.
Hilton did a remodeling and cleaned the rooms quite a bit. But I think more needed to be done, and the remodeling did not live up to expectations.
First, the pros: the beds are MUCH better. The rooms smelled fresh, and they were now quite attractive with good TVs, new rugs, and gorgeous headboards above the beds. The location couldn't be better, if you are heading to Busch Gardens, which is just down the street.
Now, the cons: The bathroom was left largely untouched. The couches in the rooms looked old, even if they were recently replaced. Maintenance seemed to be lacking. The wallpaper was torn in places, and it should've been very recently replaced! The toilet in the room was broken and not able to fixed. When we lifted up the back of the toilet, it was all rusted out. The light fixtures in the bathroom, while attractive, were rusted. The sink in the bathroom stopped up with very little water. The A/C/heater unit was not clean and probably needed a deep cleaning itself. We had to change rooms because there was an insect problem (many ants crawling across the dresser), and then again because the toilet was broken. Staff was very nice and accommodating, but didn't offer us anything after the two room changes. We asked for a discount but were told staff would have to check and get back to us after we left the hotel. Hmmmm....I didn't think it was worth the trouble, so I asked for a free breakfast, and they were very accommodating with that, especially because breakfast had already closed. Service was sparse, and it took a while to get water, and of course no omelettes made after hours, but the food was fine.
We would try staying here again. But I would like the hotel to do a little more to make guests, especially Hilton Honors guests, feel cared for while staying here. It is vacation, after all.
