We travelled back in time to stay on site in Williamsburg. First time visit to one of the seats of revoluntary fanatics. We stayed in the Robert Critch kitchen. A small house to ourselves. It was great. Don't know if we'd have liked it in the middle of the summer but coming from -15 F weather in Alberta to +79F in Williamsburg can't be all bad. When we arrived at the house, no cups were available for coffee/tea. they were only a phone call away. Was it overprived? I don't think so as profits are returned to the site. It was worth what we paid.

We have been lucky enought to splurge on a Colonial House stay in Williamsburg. The location was incredible (right on Duke of Gloucester and near the taverns). We really loved staying there and thoroughly enjoyed being able to go back to our "house/room" whenever we got too cold or tired. We stayed there last winter (I think around January) and it was freezing outside ~ even got to see a few early evening snow flakes. So again~ location, location, location.

The room was very simple (like going to your grandma's guest room for the night, minus all the knick nacks.) Or staying at a b&b without the breakfast :) . We had a nice bed (double or queen I think), a small bathroom and a view out to the main street that goes through the historic town. We did have a t.v. and that was a good creature comfort that we're just used to :) .

We were near the stairs and never heard any noises or disruptions ~ it was nice and quiet. The only negative worth the mention is that I did feel a little creeped out/spooked for some reason, but nothing out of the ordinary happened ~ I just felt a little uneasy. I'm sure it was nothing and we will gladly stay here again sometime soon.

If you are a couple traveling and looking for a romantic getaway and are not people who need a lot of ameneties, then I would highly recommend that you stay at one of the houses ~ it is a wonderful experience.

Having read the reviews on this site about the colonial houses I can certainly see the fairly dramatic swing as there is nothing "stamped out' about these houses at all. They appear to range from glorious to OK based on what you get assigned and what availability there is. I would recommend a bit of discussion w/ the reservation staff during the first call AND when you check in. My stay was very good.

I was assigned the upstairs of a 2 unit house, whiley small, it was attractive and safe as it had an outside door lock and an inside lock. While I was a single, the room had twin beds, a nice desk, bureau, big closet, a good size bathroom and many charming features like small dormers and nooks and crannies that were very pleasing to the eye. The room was really clean.

I drove to Williamsburg from National Airport (about 2.5 hours)and they have a separate building for the colonial house check ins. I was early, but they were gracious, they have a bellman drive his car and you follow him to the particular house. He explained everything about the room, carried my bag upstairs and it was a nice welcome to Williamsburg. I was directly across the street from the Inn, and diagonal (3 minute walk) to the Lodge and 1 street off Duke of Gloucester st. so everything as very convenient. I took a run very morning through the colonial town and it was very charming. I was at a conference so we ate in the lodge every night and the food was good particularly for feeding 800 people. Ate 1 lunch on site , behind one of the taverns at a picnic table and while a bit pricey, the barbecue sandwich and bread pudding were top notch.

Shower in the room was very hot,and strong, the toilet took a long time to fill but eventually stopped running, and frankly for an old house/reproduction it was in good shape. So.... if you want an old home experince it was very nice. If you want real comfort syou may want to stay in the Inn or Lodge.

My husband and I chose the Colonial Houses for our 10 Year Wedding Anniversary vacation. We stayed in the Lightfoot Tenement which is located across from the Magazine in Colonial Williamsburg. We had a beautiful four poster canopy bed to rest our feet after a long day of walking. There was a small kitchen if you chose to cook your meals. There was a living room with a working fireplace and a leather couch for you to relax and read a good book about the Revolution. It was a great place to stay for the money. I would advise you to ask for this home when making reservations. When we made our reservations, we mentioned that it was our anniversary and they had a small gift for us in our room with a note of congratulations. We had a great time.

We were assigned a tiny room with two lumpy twin beds in the Brick House. It was a creepy, tiny room with paper thin walls and leaky plumbing. The rip off of the century has to be Williamsburg charging more than $200 a night for what is close to flophouse bedding.

The staff (with the exception of Adrian, a bellman) could care less if you're pleased with the room. The focus at Williamsburg these days seems to be separating you from your money as quickly as possible.

Others have written that these accommodations are "romantic", but room 3067 at the brick house is anything but.

I can't think of a single good thing about staying here. Stay away.
