“Do NOT STAY HERE”

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel

16 Jul 2008

I would never ever stay here again or recommend staying here. As far as customer service, there is basically NONE! They have one person at the front desk who can't leave and offers little if any information. The room was DIRTY, and smelled of MOLD. I immediately went to the store and bought cleansers and Lysol. One wipe of the walls and the cloth was BLACK!!

This is what really disturbed me the most. When "housecleaning " came around to clean, we were here. So, to make a long story short, we left, came back at 11 PM to find a "Do Not Disturb" sign on our door (that we did not put there!!) and a dirty room with some towels hanging on the door. I was the last one to leave the room and we DID NOT LEAVE THE SIGN THERE.

Anyway, we could hear everything in the room next door, EVERYTHING. From the somewhat loud kids (actually normal for kids...it's just you could hear Everything)..to the housekeeping at 9:30 (we slept in with our teenager and being up late).

We made the best of it. Cleaned the whole room, so at least there is one somewhat sanitary room in the building, but WILL NEVER COME BACK, and advise anyone thinking of staying here, NOT TO!

    • Disliked — Dirty... Not clean, smells, hallways are dirty. There was garbage in the elevator and stairs for the three days straight. Disguting really.

First of all this place was never meant to be a 5-star resort, but it is an excellent place to stay while visiting williamsburg. A couple of things to mention though.

-Don't Even think about the indoor pool, my friend summed it up best: "Its more like a roman bathtub"
-'Hot Tub/ Whirlpools' never work, and are just tubs anyway.
-Its old, but not in a terrible way.
-Essentially no breakfast.
-The internet is very good and fast. (No sarcasm, it is actually very good)

However, the price makes up for all of these down falls. If you are looking for someplace to spend nights while in Williamsburg, stay here for an excellent price. However, if you are looking for lots of amenities and a highly polished off atmosphere, you should probably look somewhere else. However, a very nice hotel to crash. It also should be mentioned that we had 4 people in a 2 bed-room with 1 pullout, and we fit pretty well. The pullout was even pretty decent.

“Disgusting!”

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel

We should have known by the low rate....I'd rather pay twice as much and stay in a cleaner hotel. Our non-smoking room smelled like a tobacco factory. Our bathroon was loaded with hairs....everywhere! We woke up to a buzzing sound....no, not the alarm clock, but a hornet! And to top it all off, I picked up my daughter's clothes to find in disgust ants crawling all over them! Families beware!!!!! Only one nice thing to say, the staff was very nice and understanding when we asked to check out after just the one night, when we were supposed to be there for 2. They seemed to have heard that request many times before us!

The place is pretty nice, for $50 a night. They have a AAA discount, always a plus. The room was ok, with a king bed, "jacuzzi" which was more like an old tub with jets in it, desk, microfridge, and tiny bathroom.

Free wireless internet is also plus, as was the location-- 15 minutes to Busch Gardens and water country, and only 5 minutes from the outlets.

The housekeepers could use a few tips--there was bodily hair on the bathmat, and crumbs on the bedspread. Also, there wasn't a trash can in the bathroom! I just moved the one from the desk in there. Things were what you'd expect for $50--nice, but just... OK.

McDonalds next door was nice for breakfast, since we aren't egg people. As other guests have said, the rooms ARE noisy. We heard doors closing in the halls all the time, but didn't have any trouble sleeping after a full day at the theme park.

“Good Price, Nice Hotel”

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel

I stayed here for three nights and greatly enjoyed my stay. I can't wait to go back!. The hotel looks pretty upscale, I had a jacuzzi in my room, the staff was incredibly nice, bed was comfy; pillows were a little too full for me..You get breakfast vouchers for 2 eggs, sausage, and juice, it's not the greatest, but it's free and a hot meal. It has a 'Tahitian Tea Room' (it looked like just a room with chairs), Restaurant, room service, pool, and a breakfast area. The location was great-on the same street as every restaurant imaginable, outlets, and about 7 minutes from Williamsburg.
As far as downsides, when you first walk in you can smell smoke because the restaurant door stays open from downstairs and it drifts up. Actually all the floors actually kind of smell like smoke, but it is not incredibly strong. The restaurant converts to a club somedays so you can get a crowd of people hanging around outside in the late hours, but there was never any trouble with them. Also, I noticed there was a piece of paper taped above the wall and when I looked closely there was a hole there and as a temporary fix they put a piece of paper there.

Overall I loved the place and would stay again. Pay the little bit extra for the jacuzzi in your room, it's worth it. If you are sensitive to smoke probably don't want to stay here, and on the weekend nights there can be people hanging around that look a little shady, but there was never trouble--great place, I recommend it.
