After much humming and hawing, my wife and I decided to spend a long weekend here instead of our own gulf islands in Canada. I must say I didn't regret it one bit.
First off, realize that Whidbey Island is not a big city environment. If you are looking for high brow 5-star accomodations, go to Seattle. Whidbey is for folks who like rustic rooming, nature, peace & quiet, extremely friendly people, nice dining experiences, and quaint waterfront communities.
We stayed one night in the log cottage and two in the farm guest house. Both were very nice, but I preferred the log cottage. It was large, rustic, and really made us feel like we were out in the woods. Sitting on our deck with a glass of wine overlooking the duck pond was a definite highlight. We also enjoyed the swimming pool on hot days and the hot tub on cool nights (we had both while we were there!).
We found the beds in both rooms very comfortable and spent a fair bit of time lounging in our rooms reading, listening to music and watching movies. So, I felt the price was more or less worth it, but if your not staying around the B&B much, I could see where people can find it a little pricey. The breakfast fixings they provided were more than ample. It felt like every time we opened a cupboard there was more food! If I had to complain about anything (and this is barely a complaint), the rooms feel a touch dated. Then again, it is supposed to be a log cabin, so one could argue that it's authentic.
As for Whidbey things to do, I highly recommend Fort Casey. We cycled here from Fort Ebey (about a 24 km round trip). We also went kayaking in south whidbey with the Whidbey Island Kayaking Company. It was so amazing seeing the island from the water. We got very close to a bald eagle perched atop an old piling. Pointless Bay had a nice sandy beach. There are numerous wineries and farmers markets around and I recommend getting to as many as you can. Dining in Langley was fantastic. Pretty much any restaurant along the waterfront is a winner (though we didn't care for the pizzeria's poor service, which we walked out on before ordering). Coupeville is a nice little town for shopping. People are wonderful and friendly everywhere.
