We stayed at the Heron Inn for two nights during the recent tulip festival. It was okay, but not the luxurious experience we were hoping for. We've stayed at other bnbs that were far more comfortable and special.
We stayed in room 32 (one of the bigger rooms). The bed was placed by the window, getting nice light and a view of farmlands. The bed was stylish, comfortable, with good quality linens and a wonderfully soft duvet. The duvet was tied with strips of dried marsh grasses.
The room had a tasteful, modern decor, but was a bit dark. The narrow, shoebox shape of it prevented it from feeling spacious. There was a tiny closet and a chest of drawers, but both were a little hard to get to, so we tended not to use them. The room was also hot and stuffy at first, but if we kept the windows open it was okay.
The bathroom, though nicely remodelled, was cramped and closetlike (no windows). The fan was noisy and the light would have been better placed above the shower. The tub was new and deep, but not inviting. The only place to put our things was a skinny glass shelf above the toilet (I kept worrying that things would get knocked into the toilet). There was a pretty willow basket with towels, but since the bathroom was so tiny, I moved it out of the way, so we could have more room.
The walls were thick enough that we weren't bothered by voices from other rooms, but for some reason, everytime any of our neighbors turned their shower on or off, we could hear the groan and squeal of the handle being turned. If anyone sat out on the deck and chatted, the noise came right into our room.
It was one of the more expensive places we looked at in La Conner, so it surprised me that it seemed a bit skimpy. We only had one face towel and there weren't any extra bath towels (but I'm sure they would have provided them if I had asked ahead of time--there was no one to ask in the middle of the night). No bathrobes. Usually places will put out a fresh set of shampoos, etc., every morning, but this place didn't. There were two beautiful, comfortable leather/wood chairs for reading, but only one ottoman (so we shared). Breakfast was light and they didn't offer seconds. Although they did put out cookies, they were small and there weren't a lot.
Breakfast was served downstairs at one of three tables. Each seats four, so if you have a party of two, you are likely to sit with another couple. Breakfast consisted of a small fruit salad, a bread (coffeecake one day, a small scone the next) and an egg dish (quiche one day, scrambled eggs the next). Coffee, orange juice, milk and granola were available. I was surprised that the portions were so small. I know you probably shouldn't eat more, but my husband has a hearty appetite and he was still hungry afterward. The coffeecake was great, but overall the food was on the bland side. I don't think the vegetarian cuisine had anything to do with it. We've been to a bnb run by vegans that had some of the most wonderful, tastiest, heartiest breakfasts we've ever had.
We agree with the others that checkout/in was slow and clumsy, but the staff was pleasant. It was our anniversary, but they didn't offer anything special.
On the plus side:
They served good coffee all day long and had a lot of comfortable chairs in the lobby where you could enjoy it. It would have been nice to have a fridge in our room, but at least there was a shared one downstairs in the dining area (good for leftovers, but we were hesitant to put our cokes in there). They had a small but excellent library of DVDs (lots of new releases and covering a wide range of tastes)--the only problem was you had to make your selection by 7pm (when the front desk closes). They had a hot tub and bathing suits available for people to borrow. The backyard was pleasant with benches and a huge hammock. The decks were sunny and good for reading. They had menus from several restaurants. There were two beautiful stained glass windows next to the stairs.
We had a nice time, but we won't be back. My husband felt that they were overpriced. At a bnb we expect to have a great breakfast and great service in a pampered setting.
