After reading some of the reviews here I was prepared for the worst. Apparently the place is undergoing ownership changes and, "big changes" will be happening according to the reception staff.
My wife and I stayed in one of the woodland house lodge "suites" last weekend. The place was fine, but not really nice. I've stayed in older rental houses on the outer banks and the accomodations were of about the same quality. The bed was fine, the bathroom and fixtures were new or recently replaced. It's what one should expect in a mountain rental I'd think - working and serviceable, but not fancy. Vinyl floors and older berber carpet, not tile and plush carpet.
Calling this place a resort, however, is a bit misleading. I think of it more like a campground (camping is available) which happens to have spa services. There is a nice clean indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and tennis courts, but the facilities are a older. The restaurant/continental breakfast was not "resort" quality. The main restaurant is in fact closed. Read the previous review. The Woods (about 20 miles east) is a lot newer, has several swimming pools, golf/tennis restaurants, etc - but it's not in the mountains with access to hiking and close to nature.
Coolfont does have a great location - hiking trails into the Cacapon Mts right behind your door. We took a couple of hikes on some of the trails, some better marked than others - none marked as well as the trails actually in the State Park but still not too hard to follow.
Overall we had a great time, the scenery is wonderful, it's a beautiful part of the country. We'd probably stay there again. It wasn't too expensive and it was close to downtown and our new favorite restaurant - the Lot12 Public House. We liked it so much we went two nights in a row.
