“Coolfont is ok - but not a resort”

After reading some of the reviews here I was prepared for the worst. Apparently the place is undergoing ownership changes and, "big changes" will be happening according to the reception staff.

My wife and I stayed in one of the woodland house lodge "suites" last weekend. The place was fine, but not really nice. I've stayed in older rental houses on the outer banks and the accomodations were of about the same quality. The bed was fine, the bathroom and fixtures were new or recently replaced. It's what one should expect in a mountain rental I'd think - working and serviceable, but not fancy. Vinyl floors and older berber carpet, not tile and plush carpet.

Calling this place a resort, however, is a bit misleading. I think of it more like a campground (camping is available) which happens to have spa services. There is a nice clean indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and tennis courts, but the facilities are a older. The restaurant/continental breakfast was not "resort" quality. The main restaurant is in fact closed. Read the previous review. The Woods (about 20 miles east) is a lot newer, has several swimming pools, golf/tennis restaurants, etc - but it's not in the mountains with access to hiking and close to nature.

Coolfont does have a great location - hiking trails into the Cacapon Mts right behind your door. We took a couple of hikes on some of the trails, some better marked than others - none marked as well as the trails actually in the State Park but still not too hard to follow.

Overall we had a great time, the scenery is wonderful, it's a beautiful part of the country. We'd probably stay there again. It wasn't too expensive and it was close to downtown and our new favorite restaurant - the Lot12 Public House. We liked it so much we went two nights in a row.

My boyfriend and I were looking to stay one night (a Saturday) at Berkeley Springs. All of the B&Bs we called had a 2-night minimum, so we were happy when Coolfont said they'd have no problem with us staying just 1 night (likely because it is the off-season).

Coolfont was nestled in the woods, which we liked. When we arrived, the woman at the front desk was curt - not at all friendly. But, we ignored it and made our way to our room in the Woodland House Lodge. The room was clean and simple. (The most "unclean" part was the rusted soap holder in the tub/shower.) I would call it more of a "70s throwback" than I would "rustic," but we weren't going to be picky about it. Toiletries included toothpaste (mail sample), shampoo, soap, and a mishmash of other mail samples (chai tea with coupon and some kind of energy drink mix).

Perhaps we had arrived late the next morning (about 10 a.m.), but the continental breakfast was a bit sad. There were tiny muffins, bagel-in-a-bag, cereal, and coffee. We passed and went into town for breakfast. The previous night, we had dinner at Tari's which was nice (make reservations), and went to Origin spa for the whirlpool bath. So, our Coolfont experience as a whole was very limited to our room.

All in all, I'd say if you aren't looking for frills, this isn't a bad place to stay. The scenery, at least, was gorgeous.

“They call this a RESORT?”

Coolfont Resort

Don't get me wrong, Coolfont is not a terrible place - its a beautiful, secluded location with a restaurant, spa, lake and hiking on the grounds, and some interesting A-frame chalets and cabins. The problem lies in the details. While our chalet was clean, it smelled musty and moldy, and was in dire need of fresh paint, new carpet, and the slightest hint of a decorator. Simply put, it was run down, not rustic. While the restaurant seemed to feature competent staff, our waitress was terrible. The food was only so-so, while the restaurant itself had about the class of an I-HOP. The hiking trails were not all well marked, so we (along with several other groups) got lost. We avoided the spa but encountered others who informed us that we should stay away anyway.

It wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that we expected so much more for the money. Its WAY too expensive for what you get. We might go back if it were half the price, but based on the website, we were expecting a RESORT spa, not a bunch of run-down cabins, a lame buffet and a pool. We HIGHLY recommend you look elsewhere...

“quiet and peaceful,love it”

I keep seeing all the negative responses regarding Coolfont Resort, I have frequented them for 15 years. Dining has declined-however,they have a new chef at present.I find Coolfont a delightful ,quiet and relaxing place to visit. As long as you expect a natural,down-to-earth setting, not the Ritz, which i love the natural setting, you`ll love it.I have always felt welcomed there.Their therapists are one of the best I have experienced. The spa could use some sprucing up ,but the service far out weighs the appearance. Also the front desk has never been rude to us as some people say, maybe they are the ones with the attitude. I will continue to go to Coolfont for as along as they are standing because as I said before it is quiet and peaceful and that is why i will go there for all my vacations.

“Bad Food, nice cabin”

The dinner we ordered took over 60 minutes to arrive and when it did it was burnt and cold. We had already checked into a spacious and well appointed cabin in the woods and had high hopes for our stay here. The manager agreed that the food was not for human consumption and asked what he could do for us. This place is 3 miles from everything in town, so we asked for a refund and just wanted to leave. He said no problem. We left town and stayed in a cheap little hotel outside of town.
