I'll admit it - I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to hotel. I'm an event planner and my clients usually house me upscale properties. That said, I was very nervous about staying at the Clarion in Sheperdstown. I was pleasantly surprised. The the hotel had no frills, but was clean, had basic amenities and was convenient to Harpers Ferry.

Stayed here for a recent Antietam visit and enjoyed the experience. Not a lot of choices for the area, and the hotel is convenient if you are visiting the battlefield.

We had no complaints and enjoyed the stay. Booked two rooms for two nights at a very good price, and the rooms were fine: spacious, clean, no smells and everything in satisfactory working condition. The WiFi worked perfectly throughout the entire stay in our rooms and in the restaurant/bar area.

A highlight was the staff, service and food at Rumsey's Tavern. Everyone was friendly, helpful and prompt. The food was well prepared. There was live music both Friday & Saturday night, and supposedly other days of the week as well.

The breakfast buffet was adequate and reasonably priced, nothing special.

Someone mentioned in a previous review the dedicated parking spaces near the entrance for hotel staff. This didn't affect us one bit as we parked on the side closer to our room, but this practice does seem a little odd. I didn't get a chance to ask hotel mgmt about it, but am curious why they do this?

I would recommend the hotel to others and would stay here again if visiting the area.

I was expecting the rooms to be nicer then they were especially considering the price. Musty/stuffy smelling. Stayed on the 2nd floor. Would have been much nicer if the window opened. Pool area very nice though. The young girls at the front desk had no clue when it came to directions to local attractions.

I was very disappointed with this so called three star hotel. I would rate it at a two/two and a half star at best. The hotel is deceiving from the outside and from the lobby (both of which are nice). However the rooms are in desperate need for remodeling. The room had a musty smell. The box spring was stained on the sides. The bathroom was the worst feature of the room. The bathtub was missing molding/caulk and was riddled with mildew. The sink was also cracked and dirty. Also there was no ventilation in the bathroom. Even after a warm/short shower the bathroom remained fogged up for 20+ minutes (making the vanity area useless). The room also missed a lot of little common sense touches (like a trash can in the bathroom). However the housekeeping staff did not forget to leave behind an envelope for tips! Definitely stay some place else (like the Bavarian Inn or the new Holiday Inn Express in Charles Town).
