We heard about Hawi from some of the folks where we were staying in Kona and made the drive to the northern part of the Island of Hawai'i. We had stopped at Pololu and then headed back for lunch in Hawi. If you sneeze you will miss this town, but be sure to stop and have lunch at The Lighthouse Delicatessen.
You order your sandwich at the deli case and then find a place to sit. My husband ordered their Reuben and I ordered The Italian. We sat and waited for our lunch to arrive and watched the people wander by, only to see the neighbors from where we were staying! Then the sandwiches arrived.
My husband bit into his Reuben, and looked at me and said that it was the best Reuben he has ever tasted, and credited it to the sauce. It was not the typical thousand island, but their own secret sauce!
The Italian was Mortadella, three types of salami, pepperoni, and a mix of pickled vegetables including cauliflower, red peppers, carrots and something else I could not identify. It had to have been one of the best sandwiches I have ever had! The roll had been lightly toasted, and the flavors were heavenly!
Next trip to Kona we will definitely make a trip back here for another round!
