We needed our curry fix one evening and knew that Shivalik was the best bet. Had never visited the restaurant previously, and were anxious to dine there. When we arrived we were greeted immediately at the door and led to a lovely intimate booth. The lights were dimmed just right and the artwork and music created a perfect ambiance that relaxed you and hinted at an enjoyable evening to come.
The menu was full of choices and everything looked good. Our first-class server, Kazi, helped us choose a curry based on our taste preferences and heat tolerances. We agreed on a Murgh Tikka curry (chicken seasoned in rich yoghurt, lemon juices and spices and baked in a Tandoor oven!) along with a side of the prized Basmati Chawal rice, Tandoori Roti (unleavened bread baked in the Tandoor too!) and an order of Vegetable Samosas for appetizers. Since that evening we were more keen on flavor than fire, we opted for a medium-spiced curry. (We are big fans of Thai food, by the way, so our heat tolerances may be higher than others)
The Samosas arrived quickly were among the best we have ever eaten - crispy, fresh and full of flavor! Kazi detailed each of the three sauces that came with the dish and they were definitely worth trying. We were still raving to each other about the Samosas when Kazi presented us with our main course, still sizzling on an iron plate fresh out of the Tandoor oven. The curry smelled glorious and the presentation was worthy of a few photos. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. I can best describe it as layered flavors, with each different spice and seasoning coming to prominence before blending back into taste heaven. The rice was also perfectly cooked, not dry or not soggy, and perfect for pouring the rich yoghurt curry sauce over. The Tandoori Roti reminded me of my mother's (don't tell her!) and was excellent plain or as a wrap.
Dessert anyone? We weren't planning on any, though Kazi once again matched our tastes with a dish that complimented our dinner perfectly. We ordered the Kheer, which is a rice pudding flavored with a special rose syrup and mixed with raisins and nuts. We didn't think the food could get any better and then the dessert arrived. The rose flavors were delightfully prominent and the pudding was rich and smooth. It was so good!
When we were done, our table was promptly though quietly cleared and Kazi, as if reading our minds, let us sit back and relax for a bit and didn't rush the bill - a quality I appreciate when dining.
Overall, the entire meal was incredible! The service Kazi provided was some of the best we have experienced dining on Kauai. We have been raving about Shivalik to our friends and look forward to our next dining experience there. Mahalo!
