We had a fantastic stay at the Koa Kea - everything was taken care of from the moment we stepped on the property.
Check in: The check in process was smooth as we were shown to our room personally while getting a tour of the property. Everything is very close as this is a smaller boutique hotel, and that personal touch was appreciated. A lot of hotels these days just hand you a room key and point you in the direction to your room...
Room: Nice, clean and modern rooms, and although they aren't extremely large they do make good use of the space. Complimentary Nespresso machine was a nice touch and hubby used it each evening. The large flat screen TV was new, and the cool crisp white duvet and sheets were fresh and inviting. Bathroom was nicely equipped with a huge walk-in shower (and two shower heads - one "rainfall" one from overhead, and a normal one you could adjust to your liking.) No soaking tub, but I found that I did not miss it at all. Sweet smelling L'Occitane products for use as well.
Red Salt: Had one dinner here, as well as breakfast every morning. The breakfasts were wonderful - we had a package allowing us the continental b'fast bar plus a hot entree each morning. And mimosas. We tried just about everything on the b'fast menu and the lemon souffle pancakes, 3-egg omelet and breakfast egg burrito were our favorites. Very nice presentation and the staff of Red Salt goes above and beyond. Very pleasant to talk to - several would ask us our plans for the day, and offer gentle suggestions as to what to see and do. Dinner was amazing, and it's obvious that Red Salt is one of Poipu's best restaurants. Hubby had strip steak & fries, I had lobster and saffron ravioli. Both prepared excellently. It is a pricey meal, but worth it for sure.
Pool: The Koa Kea pool is on the small side - but with a small property you don't need a huge pool. The cushioned pool loungers (each with an umbrella - yay for shade lovers like myself!) were comfortable and always available. Pool was a comfortable temperature, and was not "rowdy" at all. This resort seems to pull more couples, honeymooners, etc...so not much "partying" going on which is fine by us, we go to relax.
Beach: The beach immediately in front of the Koa Kea is rocky, but it's also a good spot for beginner surfers to learn (they offer lessons.) If you walk to your right a few hundred yards you have a huge stretch of crescent shaped beach to enjoy. Water was a little cold for us, but the coastline in Kauai is gorgeous and affords you the most spectacular sunsets.
Spa; Our package included a 50min couples massage, which I set up beforehand with the concierge. The spa attendants were awesome - very sweet and made the whole experience very enjoyable! The massage was very relaxing, and we both commented that we'd do it again even if it wasn't included in our package next time.
Service: The title of the review is "Service is the star" and here is why- the Koa Kea staff goes out of their way in every instance to treat you well. For example, when we would valet our car, the attendants would always prepare the car with fresh towels (in case we decided to stop at a beach while out exploring), would have printed directions at the valet stand to hand out to wherever you wanted to go (how nice is that?!) and were always welcoming us back by name and asking how our day was. At night, the turndown service is amazing too. They play gentle music on the sound system and put bottles of Fiji water in an ice bucket to chill on the bedside table. It's little touches like this that really make a vacation relaxing and enjoyable.
We'll recommend the Koa Kea for sure to friends and family, and hopefully we'll be able to enjoy ourselves here again one day!
