This review is late getting posted, but Mrs. Fred & I took the little Fredinas to Maui for a couple of weeks in 2009, staying 1 week at Hana Maka Kai (the second week was on the west side) and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I had seen this house several years ago when Mrs. Fred & I came to Maui and stopped at the Venus Pool, and I thought at the time, "Man, it sure would be cool to rent THIS house next time." Well, it took a while, but I tracked it down--Tom does not advertise this property on vrbo or as much as other property owners, but that is his prerogative.
What a great, relaxing stay! The house had everything we could have wanted except for a dishwasher, but who cares when you have glorious sunrises every morning, fresh mangoes falling off the tree in the backyard, easy access to the coastline--where you'll have plenty of solitude if you choose. Tom's charcoal grill got used just about every evening, usually with me cooking freshly caught fish purchased at Hana's roadside farmer's market, along with purple potatoes, Maui beef and lettuces.
The Hana Maka Kai was a great launch point for hiking Haleakala's Pipiwai Trail and exploring areas beyond the O'heo Gulch, visiting Wai'anapanapa State Park's black sand beach and blowholes before the west-side crowds arrive, and taking in Hana. The pace is slower here, but we loved that. There really isn't much snorkeling on this side of the island, but the kids loved boogie boarding at Koki Beach, which is really pretty and just north of Hamoa Beach. Mrs. Fred & I would read our books while watching our kids play in the surf and sand.
We weren't offended by anyone driving on the road in front of the house. It's funny, but the property is so quiet that I guess the occasional car might stand out. Maybe the sounds of traffic never bothered us because we were out exploring from mid-morning to mid afternoon, most folks doing the Road to Hana have turned around by then. I would bet that the occasional car made much less noise than anything on the west side of Maui.
I would recommend this property to anyone who wants to escape the fast lane and get into the rhythm of the ocean for a while. We would come back here in a heartbeat.
