We (me, wife and 10 year old daughter) have just returned from a few days in SF staying at the Francisco Bay Inn. We selected this property based in large part on reviews here. Our criteria was being close to Fisherman's Wharf, cont. breakfast, double queen room and free parking!
The hotel is currently being worked on. It looks awful all covered in plastic and boards. The work itself did not affect us at all but it has taken away 30+ parking places in a small lot. Parking is very difficult at this time. If you don't find a spot, you need to leave your keys with the desk (open 24 hrs) and double park.
We were on the 4th floor. They told us right away that the elevator only goes to the third. We carried all of our stuff up the stairs. The room was okay but a bit cramped with two queen beds. Luckily it faced the back of the building because Lombard St is very busy and noisy. Lots of busses and traffic to hear. The bathroom was large and well lit. We had a fridge and microwave which was helpful.
The continental b'fast was pretty much nothing! A few sweets in a 2 foot area of the Office. Probably similiar to other places but we've had so much better lately at other hotels.
We were able to walk to the Wharf with our 10 year old but it is about a 15 minute hike. There are good eateries on Union St. three to four blocks away. We enjoyed Perry's, very family friendly.
The Exploretorium (sp?) is less than 10 minutes away by car with FREE parking. Don't miss this attraction!! City busses also run in that direction.
All in all, an average stay. I would skip it while the work is on. My guess is that we would try a different place next time.
